Hobby shops are evil! evil I say, just pure evil! either that or I am just weak…[swg]
I stopped in during lunch at the LHS I go to most often and I found out he is moving next month to a bigger place not any further than where he is now (sweet!). Right now he has a ton of Hasegawa kits on sale, 1:48 Spitfires on for $21, Mustangs for $24, BF-109s for $20, all great deals! and I promised the wife I wouldn’t buy anymore until my B-day (in July).[:(]
Anyway, I only went in there needing ocean gray and medium sea gray for my Spitfire. Then I thought to myself “what else do I need”… big mistake…
Oh yeah, a resin seat might look nice, anything else?..
Deep in the box of resin goodies I also saw a pack of pilot access doors. Hey, I want to open it so that would be good.
Needless to say I could have kept going. I had to stop, pull out the cash and leave before anything else caught my eye! I was able to get away with a set of two ultracast seats and two access doors (and my paint). I also almost bought a vacuform canopy but I thought I’ve already bought too much. Besides I didn’t by another kit, right? I made a promise to my wife but that doesn’t include the extra details right…[;)][}:)]
Did I mention, I think I may be addicted to resin seats and vacuform canopies?[:D] ( I love this hobby!)
…and so ends this installment of the adventures of Jay and has trips to Uncle Bills Hobby Shop. Be sure to tune in next week when Jay goes looking for an elusive BoB decal set at a different LHS![oX)]
Yeah, I promised my mom I wouldn’t buy any more plastic kits.
2 weeks later i have an entirely resin armor kit and a mixed media special hobby firefly. (I agree the mixed media is pushing it a bit, but I thought the resin armor kit was a great loophole…[:D])
Jay I’m glad to hear you picked up some Ultracast goodies (even if you didn’t mean to), as far as I am concerned they are the best AM resin around for the Spitfire.
My Eduard set for the P-47 arrived yesterday and for once I don’t have to remove 90% of the detail from the existing cockpit in order to attach the PE bits and pieces. About the only major thing that needs to go is the detail on the IP which is this evening’s job.
Darren, those Ultracast seats are really nice! I know I am going to be using more resin seats in the future!
I have the interior green on my cockpit pieces but I’m on a roll with my Canso so until I get the Canso’s fuslegae closed up, I’ll probably not do more on the Spitfire until then. Looking forward to seeing the finished pics Termn8tor.
Jay glad to hear that things are going well on the Spit. I must admit I’m looking forward to some pics of that one because the image in your sig looks extremely cool.
Progress wise on the P-47 I actually had a great long weekend for modeling with lots of progress made on all my current builds. I have scraped and sanded all the detail I need to from the Thunderbolt pit and painted it Tamiya Deep Green which I think is a good match for the interior color of the P-47. Now I’ll leave it for about 24 hours to cure and then Future the wheels wells and the pit in preparation for a wash.
Question for the group, I was reading online last night about a guy who adds Future to Tamiya paints to give them a glossy finish which allows a wash to go on without having to add a separate clear coat. Great idea I thought, I’ll have to remember that for next time, but can someone tell me what ratio of Future/Paint I should use to get a nice glossy finish?
I return from 2 weeks of insanity at work and WOW all this catching up to do, Jay & Karl I saw your builds for the BoG GB SUPER work both of you.
Trmn8tor nice work looking forward to seeing the finished product & Joe nice finish on the corsair.
I did get some work done on my builds despite work & Mrs Bear realising that if Darren has a long todo list Bear should have a long todo list[}:)]
Here are some progress shots of my Spit. I hope you can see the pe detail on the side walls.
Since those pics were taken the wings and fuselage have been assembled and the seems closed and sanded. I should be ready to start painting this weekend Mrs Bear permitting[:)]
A question to all, what color was the tail band on the spifires circa 41-42 my references are confusing and I’m confused a paint ref would be greatly appreciated.
Good job Marc, as for the tail band I thought they were sky.
Well my “to do” list is getting longer what with spring here and yard work needing to get done. I have a feeling my modeling time will get pushed to the back burner.[:(]
Thanks for the feed back guy’s and the Band Ref info. The various sources had the bands as egg shell, duck egg even khaki so it’s enough to drive me crazy.
Jay Bummer lawn work sucks. I got most of mine done last weekend just a few more odd’s & end’s and I can enjoy the yard.
Marc, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy yard work but you must remember, Alberta is a few weeks behind Ontario and Quebec for the spring season. I think we’ve had only one or two days in the past couple weeks that have been higher than +15. Most have been in the + 6 to10 range.
Temperature’s have been pretty nice here for awhile but as I inherited a weed infested mess of a lawn and garden from the previous owner I have my work cut out for me. [:(] I’m still trying to finish up some painting inside too. [:(][:(]
Bear sorry to here the old job list is getting longer, I hope I didn’t drop you in it.
As to the Spitfire fuselage band issue, Rick is correct that the majority of the bands were painted Sky but not all. Check your references for the kit you are doing as I have seen them painted Sky Blue, Yellow and yes Duck Egg Blue.
Nice work on the Spit so far.
Joe thanks for the heads up on the paint/future mix ratio. I’m going to give that a whirl next cockpit I do.
Sigh I’m STILL waiting on the postal service to get my kit to me so I haven’t had a chance to start yet. But i hope the building is going well for the rest of you guys [:D] TTFN
Dave I sympathise with you three years ago when we moved in to the new place the lawn was in terrible shape weeds, bald spots, bugs now it’s starting to look pretty good just regular maintenance.
Darren No worry’s my wife has had me in her sights for a few months now preparing me for the big renovation plans it’s just the timing with your comment on your job lists that was to funny.
As for the fuselage bands I did a bit more digging and your right the bands did vary somewhat. I just picked up a revell Spit Mk Vb with decals for 402 sqn RCAF and the band is sky so I’ll do mine in sky also. Thanks again for the feed back guys.
Hey guys, is it just me or are there way to many good GBs and just too little time. A new Midway GB was posted and so was an Axis Aces GB and Tanky’s CBI GB. I also remember someone talking about an Eastern Front GB too!
I want to do all of them but I just don’t know if I’ll have time. [:(] escpecially since I haven’t got much done on this GB and I still haven’t closed the fuselage on my Canso for the BoA GB. Plus the BoB 2006 GB is starting in a couple weeks. sheesh, my time is stretched pretty thin these days. I know I’m not the only one but I still feel like venting. [:(!]
ahh, that feels a little better, thanks for your ears guys.
I know the feeling Jboutin. There are so many great GBs going on, it’s impossible to resist! [(-D] At least the Axis build is almost 6 months away.
Anyway, I’ve got all the parts washed for my P-40 and am in the process of cleaning up all the resin cockpit bits. This is my first time working with Resin, so I’m trying to be extra careful so I don’t mess anything up.
I hear ya Jay: I am way over committed at the moment and I can’t possibly join anymore until next year and in fact I may eventually have to drop out of a couple. I’ll jump into Rick’s Eastern front GB later this year but that is definitely it… (I think!!![:o)]) That doesn’t mean that the other GB ideas aren’t great, it just means there are too few hours in the day! [:(]
