2nd try at my 1st attempt M4 winter camo

Hello All,
Have some before and after shots for your opinions and critique.
When I posted, some thought I needed to tone down my camo, so after making that attempt, please let me know what you think. Was it better before or should it stay where it is or do I need to tone it down further?
The first shot is the before.

Thanks for taking the time to look and give your opinion(s).

Hello Panther 44!

Here’s is my honest opinion. To my taste it’s overdone.
There is too much weathering at the running gear and too much of white wash.
The white wash is too heavy and should be more gentle, so we could see the sherman underneath. I feel that you worked long houres on you shermy and I feel it’s a shame I cant see your job.

If you’ll do this more carefully (and probably less hastely on the white wash) It would have been better. Hope to see some more nice work done, I feel you are on the right track! [:)]

I’m no expert but I thinks that looks great.

Looks really good to me. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the comments.
ShModeler,
You say there is too much weathering at the running gear. Would you be more specific? Too large an area covered? Overall too thick? Both?
Also you say the white wash needs to be more “gentle”. What do you suggest? Is there a particular method you can share, that would help me to achieve that look?
Thanks,
Joe

Hey Joe,

Nice dirty little Shermie. Are you airbrushing, rattle can or what, brush? I really like the discolored areas where good ‘ol GI Joe was steppin’ around and well, that mud on the suspension looks real. She ain’t gonna win no beauty contests but I think you’ve done a cool model…

Steve

That’s an awesome looking sherman with some very convincing weathering. I’d have to disagree with ShModeler. The whitewash looks good with it’s wear spots and fuel/oil/rust runs. The mud also comes across well, and it’s very convincing.

I have one piece of constructive critism to offer… The whitewash has made some of the weld lines too white, but only in a few places. That observation is really a nit pic. It’s just a gorgeous model. Congrats.

[:D] i think your cammo is well done,[:D]

Looks good, leave it alone and go build something else. I am about to build my first sherman also.

Be glad you FINISHED a model!!! Many times I get too hung up on the little details and the model stays half-built. Finish and move on! That’s what I’ve been tring to do lately [}:)]

Panther 44 ,

great weathering, it is just a question of what look you want.

I have just completed a M4A3 105mm, will post today, but I deliberately went for a lightly weathered approach. Just to get a different look. All my other tanks are heavily weathered, with oil washes, dry brushes.

My Sherman was just subtly weathered with pastel chalks, lamp black mixed with white, dusted over lower hull. Burnt umber mixed with white, dusted over upper hull and tracks.

check out my pics later today, will post next to my heavily weathered Tiger1.

experiment with each build,

[:)]

With winter camouflage, I spray the whole model white then dry brush the original olive drab etc to show wear, works for me. As for your model if it looks right to you then it is right. Personnally it looks like a tank that is driving through mud after a heavy thaw and looks OK

Hello All,
Want to thank everyone for taking a peek and leaving comments. The compliments are nice and encouraging, but the criticisms provide direction.
Not wanting to stir things up, but I was pretty much satisfied with the original effort, but I’ve seen the work posted here and value the opinions of you folks. That was the reason for attempting to “adjust’” the weathering. And I was glad that I did rework the camo because I like it a bit better now.
I try and go by what I see in books and quite honestly, I’ve seen some Shermans in winter camo that look very clean. I have also seen some that were well worn. Personally, I like that well worn look, as some of you may have noticed[;)].
It’s very hard for me to express myself, so please forgive me if my statemets offened anyone. That is not my intention. I do offer my heartfelt thanks for all comments and hope you all will continue to help encourage and correct in my journey for the building the “perfect model”[:D]
Regards,
Joe

Looks good to me, Joe!
I applaud your bravery jumping back on a completed build to try to improve it!

hey, looks good and dirty to me… nice job!

Hey Guys,
Again, thanks for the comments.
Steve,
I airbrush. Did the OD first and tried a “haphazard” camo job and didn’t like it. Went over it with the airbrush and went overboard, so that is why I took the advice of some to try and tone it down.
Brian,
Thanks, it’s because of you and some others that I tried to do something with it. I was happy with the way it looked on the first posting, but think it does look better now. Was a chance to improve my skills. Hopefully will improve with time and each new build[:-^][:-^]
[:D] Joe [swg]

Nice job. Sure, it’s dirty. I think it replicates nicely the look of a Sherm that’s been up to its waist in mud. Listen to MuzzleFlash, move on. I just finished a whitewashed Pz IV ausf. G and couldn’t leave it alone! I was constantly going back again and again with a paintbrush in hand. Move on to something else comforted by the thought you’ve learned a new technique or two to apply to the next bit 'o plastic. [:)]

Dennis

I think it looks great! I am too chicken to really go to town with a heavily used tank… yours looks fantastic! Nicely done! [:)]

Looks great as usual. Nice mud, cover on MG a 1st for me. But I really like the drips down the side of the stars. It’s the little things that get me. Nice job.

Hey Guys,
I really appreciate all the input.
muzzleflash / sh00ter,
Is a kit really ever done?[swg]
ridleusmc,
Really didn’t notice the weld seams. But after taking a look they do stand out quite a bit. Maybe just one more touch[;)]
espins1,
It’s really not that difficult. You just use several different techniques and build up the effect in “layers”, just like it would occir on the real thing. The people who do the great jobs are the ones who do the subtle weathering jobs. I think they are harder to pull off in a convincing fashion. Fortunately for me, I prefer the abused look[:-,]
Matt,
The cover is a “crew preference”[:-^]
Thanks to All,
Joe[8]

! was orignally going to comment that maybe your camo was a tad heavy, until i went and looked at my references of the sherman (I am doing a Red Army Sherman next) and I have to say your camo is spot on with what I saw in those. US Shermans seem to get thier stars wiped out by wear and camo over time so you definetly got the look down. Great build sir!
