251 w/ landscaping & guys now-last pics I swear

I just finished the base for the 251/17 I completed recently. I wish I had the space to make a base for all the armor. On a suggestion in Armorama I tried Durham’s Roack Hard Water Putty. Fantastic stuff. No shrinkage, cracking, hardens very fast and takes paint well.

Looks nice Marc, but I feel it needs some figures to give it some life. Maybe a little more vegetation for additional color on the side of the road? Your shoulders of the road are slightly indistinct, IMHO.

Marc, I think it looks fantastic brother!! Looks ready to jump in and drive right off the base!

yeah doog… I knew if I stayed with with armor long enough I would have to learn how to do figures too. For the moment, the crew is just off camera coming back from a potty break[;)] I’ll have to see whatthe LHS has to put some life in there.

Point taken about the shoulders. I was going for a track that was cut through a field so the shoulder would be more disticnt. I’ll try and straighten them out with a better grass line.Thnaks for the input.

Thnaks Jester, but doog’s right… who’s gonna drive[:D]

Yeah, but I cant say anything bout figs. Last time I tried to paint a fig, he turned out looking like a cast member for a Cesar Romero zombie flick!!

That’s what scares me [(-D] Maybe if they turn out all bug-eyed i can have them saying.“OMG LOOK AT ALL THOSE PLANES COMING RIGHT AT US!”

Sounds like a great title for the base plate! [(-D] I will definitely say this, you’ve done a great job of matching up the weathering on the vehicle to the base it is now resting on. [tup]

I know that was tongue-in-cheek, but figure painting isn’t that hard to get started on…

Don’t worry about painting eyes at first. GIs are out in the sun a lot and have a tendency to squint, so the eyes can be little black slits and look pefectly fine…

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can only focus on an object-up to about 4-5 inches. In 1/35th scale, that translates to around 20 feet, so you needn’t include any detail that wouldn’t be seen on a real person 20 feet away…

Don’t be afraid to tackle some figures now and then… If you do, you’ll soon be on your way to being a diorama builder… That’ll open a whole 'nudder modeling world for ya…

That’s one helluva nice 251 wingnut!!! I think that the base looks great too!![tup]

Bill, HVH, PAnzer88… thanks guys.

HVH, I had read somewhere about just doing the opening dark. i will have to give it a whirl.

Nice job wing nut… I’ve allweas found that IMO a base allweas adds something to a build.

[:)]

wing_nut: Great work Marc, setting sure does add to the build! I especially like the track impressions. [#ditto]…the doog though, especially on the fig’s…just what you needed to hear huh[|(]…!? As far as vegetation, I see you have some but something vertical, like trees, will help the composition…it’s very linear/horizontal IMO. Trees will also help frame the 251, place them in the corners when possible.

Fig’s and trees…something like this:

Stop already!! Every time I open a post of yours, you raise the bar just a little higher for the rest of us doing the 251 build. But now you’ve boxed yourself into a corner. [wish there was a smiley for evil grin]. Figures are a must. So get crackin’.

Really nice work; the base adds alot. But I agree with the comment that you need more vertical. Doesn’t have to be trees, but some tall grass on either side to better define the track (or path), as Doog suggests would be beneficial. Also, since the ground appears to be somewhat soft and muddy, you could dirty up those front tires a bit more. If it’s leaving tracks in the dirt, the there should be dirt in the tread. The trailer tires look fine; the 251 front tires look a bit too clean.

Don

thats a sweet 251 wing! i really like the base, where did you get the water putty?

I like it a lot too Marc. Perhaps a little too ‘parallel’ for me but it does look good. The base may be a tad too long for your presentation unless you’re going to fill in up front of the subject with something and turn it into more of a diorama. The ground work does look good and I would have to second (or third or fourth) the addition of figures to make this a real winner.

You may find display space to be at a premium as you build more and more models. Shaving off a few inches here and there on your bases may benefit you down the road some.

My two cents worth… hope that you don’t mind.

The shoulders are a bit mot defined and I added a couple of guys. Your are all correct… looks better now. Thanks for the input. They are in place with a bit of handi-tack atthe moment.

wing_nut: You’re good at fig’s too[:O]…nice 5 o’clock shadow on that one dude and great work on the uniform’s and boots…top notch!!!. The map is a nice touch. I still say a tree or two are in order but this is a beauty as is…those fig’s real gave it the final touch!

How’s this? The image “http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/9905/devilred4ry.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I agree; otherwise, this is a fantastic accomplishment. To me, it just looks so real from every angle.

Wingnut

I LIKE it. [tup][tup]

Those figs definately elevate this one to ‘the next’ level. Beautiful.

By the way, do I recognize that map…?

EDIT: Whoops, just checked my PM’s, and the answer is yes… yes I do…

Nicely done Wingnut!

Egads. AND you can paint figs? I hate you man, I hate you. [(-D]
