1/32 Fw190D-11 "jet defender" lots of pics

The basis of this build was a 1/32 Hasegawa FW 190D-9. I used the Rutman D-11 resin conversion set. To make most of the modifications I then added a aries masters cockpit, exterior PE set, Quick boot exhaust + gun sight as well as eaglecals decals. I scratch built/added the throttle lever, radio antenna, brake lines, cooling gill actuators, light rivet detail, flattened the tires and changed parts of the insterment panel to represent a D-11 fully fitted with bad weather gear and up graded gun sight… Hollow brass was used for the cannons. The prop blades, spinner, gun hood, supercharger intake scoop, upper 20mm cannon buldges, lower center wing insert, lower otter wing inserts and cockpit are all resin. I had the resin fuselage for the D-11 but the fit was so poor I found it would be less work to use the kit fuselage and do all the modifications and rescribing to it rather then fight with resin example. The other resin parts fit very well and I had little or no trouble incorporating them in with the kit parts.

The aircraft modeled is a vary rare non production prototype V58 version of the Fw190D-11. Originally flown by focke-wulf for testing then used by the verbandsfurhrerdchule Gdj. This aircraft has been painted over twice in is a career. Once by the Verbandsfurhrerdchule when they received it from focke-wulf and again when taken by JV44 and quickly redone in the wurgerstaffel “jet defender” colors. This is a very unusual D with a lot of history behind it. Not only is she colorful with the Jv 44 marking but the not often seen RLM 81 molted with 75/76/83 gives it a real eye catching look. The partly painted over tactical numbers, stripped bottom and slogan gives the viewer a lot to look at. According to my research red 4 did have all radio and electronic hardware installed and all antennas were in place. The only other fully fitted D serving with the jet defenders was red 3. Another odd feature of this D-11 is the Very early style canopy fitted to a late prototype jumo F powered mechine In fact all other Ta’s and D’s powered by the jumo F have the late blown hood. Packing 2200+ HP, four 20mm cannons and upgraded weapons electronics this was the last thing a P-51 wanted to see pull in behind him.

The Wurgerstaffel of JV44 only task was to defend the me262 during take off and landing operations. They were forbid to persue allied fighters. The colorful lower surfaces were to aid flak gunners that ringed the airfield in identifying them. Red 4 operated the various airfields within the Reich until wars end. Pilot info for red 4 is sketchy. Karl-Heinz Hoffman was probably the pilot but no real proof can be found.

In some of these pics the weathering appears heavier than it really is. This seems due to the lighting I am using. When looking at the close up pics you can get a better idea of what it looks. I have a color enhasement builb used in aquaruims. It does a great job of bring out color, but at the same time overstates some color changes it when photographed. Also I noticed the some of my pics the pilot tube is missing off the wing. I must have knocked it off during the photo shoot. With all the small details, fine rivets and layered color shades used it’s best viewed up close and in person. I have not got a good pic of the bottom yet. There’s a lot of paint work and weathering done there. I’ll post one after this weekend.

As always thanks for looking, and questions or comments are welcome

2 closer shots shot fine rivit detail and over painted unit numbers

Now there’s a truley exciting build, with a fascinating history. I’ve read a very little bit about the D-11s role late in the war, but never got to see the unusual markings underneath! That orange underside sure catches the attention, doesn’t it? Very beautifully done![8D]

Stan, that is one truelly outstanding build. I especially like the weathering on it. Interesting subject and nice history of the aircraft. You obviously did a lot of research on this one. Nice touch and great build.

Steve

Outstanding build Stan! [bow] And all this time I thought you could only post [(-D]

Fantastic job though, way to go! [#toast]

That is a very nice job. I think the 109 is a great plane and I have built my share of them…3 1/72s and a 1/48. Got 2 1/32s still in the boxes and I hope they end up looking as good as yours.

Well done and well presented, Stan! Thanks.

John

That’s an awesome build. But I wanna see pics of the underside!

Stan that is really nice. Great airbrush work. Nice bit of research too. Question about the tail. In a couple of the pics the vert stab has a piece on the front that gives the profile of the wooden tail. Was that a removeable piece on the real A/C? Would it have been added for extra stability or simply to make the A/C appear to be a differnet version?

I LOVE the D-9, that is a stunning model. Very well done.

Extremely nice work on the 190. The finish and weathering looks very realistic.

Very nicely done. You did “Red 4” proud. This kit is next on my list. Anything to look out for?

Andy

Tremendous build, Stan! WOW! [bow]

Your skill with the AB is incredible.

Has me seeing red for sure! [tup]

Great looking D-11.

The finish is top notch.

Karl

thanks for all the feed back guys. It’s great to hear what you all think. I will be in Dayton this weekend so I’ll post to any responses on monday.

Porkbits (funny name I like it) The bottom of this thing I think came out pretty good. There so much small detail on it I can’t get it on it’s back and take a pic at the sametime. The wife and I will be home tonight and I’ll post a few bottom pics on monday.

wing nut I’m sitting here trying to figure out what you mean and I think I have. In pic 1 and 5 the you catch just a bit of the other side of the tail in line with the rudder is this what you are seeing? I did nothing to the tail, it’s one of the stock pieces from the kit. It’s also the standered production tail for a D-9. D-9’s did have alot of production variety. 5 different gun hoods were used, 3 tails, 2 props, 3 different prop hubs get into electronics, gun sights, radio, and such and you’ll find strange combs.

Wulf, when you not throwing a ton of resin at it this is the best 190D kit out. Built 3 of them and I have 2 more of these in my stash and 2 of the revell germany wide tails. The cockpit detail out of box is excellent and should be fine. The fit is great no complex cowling like the hasegawa A. The wing roots have a little alingment problem but not bad by any means. As far accuracy goes, The only real problem is the gun hood has slightly too much buldge to it. Also like the A-8 the flaps are set at 90 degrees but this is easily fixed (just bend the tabs to 60 degrees and call it a day. If you really want to nit pick the kit it dose combine a few early and late D details, BUT I have not found a 190D kit that didn’t (the tamiya 1/48 kit is full of them). Being a hasegawa kit it lends it’s self to alot of added details if you choose to do so. This would be my first choice for a fw190D kit in any scale.

Your extra efforts made an extraordinary model of a magnificent airplane!

…a real pleasure to the eyes! LUV-IT!

Ho-hum, another jaw dropping build from Stan… [zzz]

j/k, outstanding work my friend!

drew I have been yaking more than modeling but I still kick a few out here the there[:)]

Luftwaffle, Thanks much my friend. I just looked around your web site quickly yesterday, Very nice stuff. I’ll have to look more when I get the time.

Where’s frank, getting more teeth pulled[}:)]

OOPS my bad[:D] Now I see the leading edge of the opposite horizontal stab. My brain just could not getthe shape of theWooden tail form the ta 152, that was fitted to a small number 190D’s, out of my head.

Someone built one too many wide tails [:D]

You had me going for about 5 min here. I took the model out and gave the tail a good looking over. Then thought marc has built several of these and knows what he looking at, what the heck i’m I missing. I then reread the post again and see “in some of the pics” Scroll up and fish eye the pics and thought just that, he seeing a wide tail due to the angle the pic was taken.

Good because I thought I was going nuts, Well ok I am nuts. I thought the condition was getting worse[:P] thanks for the compliment marc.
