Looks like Z-M is going to officially reveal the kit tomorrow…but these test shots from Scale Plastic & Rail look pretty staggeringly awesome. Is this a banner year for the Mustang or what?
Wow that looks like a nice detailed kit,1/32?
Yep, 1/32.
If it’s anywhere close to that Skyraider they’re coming out with, it should be pretty amazing and not cheap.
Yea that Skyraider looks tight and has a price tag to match, but for that kind of quality at that scale its to be expected I geuss
Wow! I agree with you guys. Very detailed but the price will probably be outrageous.
I will guess in the $200-$230 range.[:'(]
When you take the price tag into account, I’m not sure it’s competition for Tamiya is it? Tamiya ends up looking like a bargain…
They’re asking $140 for the Skyraider…
$140… plus $ $ $ if you want the long list of options they have hanging below the main pic in their ads. Makes me think their marketing dept has a background in auto sales…
Way to rich for my blood
But isn’t that the kind of approach a lot of people on here clamor for? Just the kit and leave all the pricey mixed-media out? Outside of the armament set (a simplified version of which I think should be included with the kit), every add-on is pretty standard aftermarket stuff - interior/exterior PE (by Eduard, no less), resin tires, metal 20mm barrels…
I’m frankly surprised they aren’t also offering a loaded kit for like $225 that comes with all that stuff.
I’ll definitely be doing a P-51 in 1/32, but I want to complete at least two NMF builds on umm… ‘cheaper’ kits before potentially messing up something as nice as either this one or the Tamiya kit. In four attempts since coming back to the hobby last year I still haven’t produced a perfectly ‘clean’ build, at least by the lofty standards of the folks at this site… and if I’m going to spend as much (very enjoyable) time as I have at getting back into the hobby, I really want to strive for that level.
Does Z-M have as loft a reputation for injection mold quality as Tamiya? I see their glossy adverts in FSM for the Skyraider, and it certainly looks good, but if anyone has it yet I haven’t seen any build reviews. The Skyraider looks like a beautiful plane, but it’s not one I have any emotional connection to, so it’ll be pretty far down the list. Have they said anything about features like Tamiya’s scale-thin removable engine panels? That’s my biggest complaint with the Trumpeter models I’m building right now… great details, but you can’t see them without taking a razor saw to the fuselage.
From what I’ve read (nobody’s done a build of the Skyraider because it’s only now starting to ship), they’re not up to Tamiya’s level when it comes to fit and feats of engineering wonder. But I saw one of their Shindens at the Austin show recently and it was very, very slick.
For a practice build…you can pick up the old Hasegawa/Minicraft P-51 for pretty cheap with a bit of patience. I got mine off eBay (in the old school box art and everything) for $10 or something stupid like that a few months back.
I’m planning on building it and the Tamiya side-by-side.
From the photos, it appears they took a cue from the old Monogram Phantom Mustang and expanded on the theme- sans electric motor and working features, of course.
Well, that does it.
Now everybody who bought the “other” P-51 has to throw it out and buy the new Zoukei-Mura kit.
BTW…the new Zoukei-Mura kit is less than $229, isn’t it?
Or do the floor mats, rust proofing undercoat , Mag Wheels and pin-striping cost extra?
Fair enough with the add-ons vs aftermarket comparison. I guess it’s just beyond what my brain will let me pay for plastic to start with, before even looking at the other goodies. $225 is a safe #, $4 more and I’d have to ask permission… [whstl]
To be honest, I’m not in the market for another 1/32 P-51D anytime soon. The Hasegawa and Tamiya in the stash are plenty for me. But if I were going to spring for another, I’d still buy the Tamiya again until this kit actually comes out and proves equal to or better. Which is really hard to imagine…the Tamiya kit is just stupid good.
I thought that I am not in the market for another 1:32 scale P-51D looking at the 2 displays on my bookshelf. [:|]
Then Zoukei-Mura anounced this $95 price with $80 introduction promotion ad in the FSM the last few months. I know that I cannot say “no” anymore. [:D]
I see no reason not to build it OOB. [:P]
It was supposed to start delivery in late Feb, but the last I checked, nothing yet.
The Zoukei-Mura 1/32 P-51 advertisement in FSM promised delivery from Feb to late May. Has anyone seen his order yet?
My pre-order was placed in March.
I’ve seen large built-up photos of the Z-M, and in my opinion it looks better than the 1/32 Tamiya kit: The leading edge of the wings is visibly thinner and sharper, as it should be, and is blended in a better way into the fuselage: The Z-M panelling generally looks a bit more realistic, and has less of that undefinable “plastic” look to it compared to Tamiya, although how much of that is to the finishing skills of the builder is hard to say: It made the Z-M look superior, except for one thing: The exhausts looked poor on the Z-M and absolutely have to be replaced unless they were pre-production or substitute parts on that model, as they looked a bit “irregular” and odd…
