Does anyone know the FS number for Zinc Chromate Yellow. I need to make some for a project I am starting. I have a link that shows all FS numbers but they do not include the name.
FS 33637 looks like the correct color but I want to be sure.
To me that looks too bright. IMPS Stockholm has a great article on interior colors and the difficulty of saying without doubt which is correct. I hope that this helps!
Don’t have the FS# at hand but the Testors bottle # is 1184
Bill, I read through that site when I was trying to find the FS number. I have been to about a dozen sites and none give the FS number for Zinc Chromate Yellow. I did find a FS for Zinc Chromate Green.
Yeah, that’s the only one I could find too. The FS number you mentioned looks more like chrome yellow, not chromate yellow. This is why I’ve only used Interior Green! LOL!!

Edit Testors Model Master Acryl #4851 is called Yellow Zinc Chromate.
I knew there was a post a while ago about paint colors that mentioned another cross-reference. Here is a link to one posted by tho9900 (Tom) back in April
That shows a Yellow Green (Zinc Chromate) that translates to FS33440 (which might be a touch too green?).
No, Green Zinc Chromate is btl# 1734 and they have a FS 34151 Interior Green MM#1715…[8D] Edit…these are Enamel color #'s

I just remembered then I built my P51 it called for yellow zinc chromate in the wheel wells and Tamiya suggests XF-4 Yellow Green that looks about right to the pics on the IPMS Stockholm article, so that’s what I used for that. Considering you can only see it if you pick it up and turn it over, that’ll do!
It’s cool Bgrigg, I’ve just seemed to have bought every darn paint recomended by kit manufacture over the years that I have most of them on hand to refer to. MM, Testors little bottles, Tamiya, some Humbrol, Xtra Color and now I have to get the selection of Alclad II…Jeesh sometimes I think it cost me $100 bucks to build a $25 dollar model…Oh well still love it!..[8D]

I decided I was going to stick to Tamiya Acrylics. That has been somewhat limiting when it comes to matching colors exactly. It has also helped me realize that I build models because I like to build models and I shouldn’t worry about exact nuances of colors. It also means that I have to search for cross reference paint charts, and I have a slew of them bookmarked.
Through some of my research I found out the following.
Aircraft manufacturers were getting their Zinc Chromate Yellow from car makers. As the demand grew, the car makers could not keep up with the demand. Boeing took Chrome Yellow, mixed zinc powder and aluminum powder and called it Zinc Chrome Yellow. Curtiss took Trainer Yellow and mixed zinc powder and aluminum powder and called it Primer Yellow, later called Curtiss Yellow Primer. None of these matched the ZCY provided by the car makers. The USAAC asked Boeing for the formula and specified that was the color to be used. It became known as Zinc Chromate Yellow. The problem was that each manufacturer did not follow the exact mixing procedure, even Boeing, so that is why so many shades appear. Some aircraft manufacturers continued to get their ZCY from the automobile industry and even their shades differed from batch to batch.
I do know that ZCY was used in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s on doors, panels and inside of electronic compartments. Zinc Chromate Green was used in wheel wells, missile bays, and bomb bays up until the late 60’s.
That color looks a little too green.
Yeah, it does, but not as green as the one offered by Vallejo (33440).
Tell me Bill, what is the project and what paints do you use?
The project is for the Intercepter Group Build. I am doing F-102A, 56-1027 from the 32nd FIS, 1963. The aircraft had the left forward electronics door damaged and the replacement door was all ZCY. It flew that way for over six months until one day I came in to work on a Monday and found the Buzz Numbers on all of our aircraft were painted over. My jet, 027, also had the Fwd Elect Pnl finally painted.
As far as paints I use mostly Model Master and Gunze with an occasional Pactra thrown in. I try to stick with acrylic but have to use enamel when acrylic isn’t available.
Then I would suggest checking out Testors Model Master Acryl #4851 which is called Yellow Zinc Chromate.
For enamel I highly recommend Xtracolor X408 Matt Zinc Chromate.
I checked with several on line suppliers and none carried the MM ZCY. Squadron did have Aeromaster interior yellow which is a match to the paint chart I have so I ordered through them.
That is the only color holding up my starting the “Slobering Wolf” Deuce.
I believe (not 100%) that the FS number would be 33481 for yellow zinc chromate. checked it out for the paint ref I have and verified it on another site… but sounds like you found what ya want…

That sure looks like it. Now I will be able to make my own now that I know the FS number. I am going to file that one away in case I need it. Thanks for the information.
