I did it! I admit it. I chickened out on doing zimmerit on my Dragon King Porsche. I ordered an Atak zimmerit set for it. (Even comes with a new turret!) I’ll be interested to see how good it is. I bought one for my 1/72 Tiger I a month or so ago and was pretty impressed with it, but haven’t tried it for fit, yet. Will probably be in on Monday.
Chicken…naaaaah. Its one of those thing where if you go hummmm take my chances on this 45$$ kit or say forget it and try another time. BUT!!! However it does take alittle practice, I used old A/C and cars and the Panther A from tamiya.
I did both my Tiger I and my Panter A in zimm, so it’s not like I’ve never done it before. Mostly wanted to try something different. Probably wish I hadn’t, but what the heck! It’s only one more model I could have bought, right??
I was going to say you were probably burned out after your Panther. Zimming braille? Now that would be a challenge.
I’ve got everything to do the zim thing, but I’ve been eye balling Cavilier sets for my Porsche turret. We’ll see, much like you, I’ve done zim before, but after seeing Moses’ job on his, I’m a little intimidated!
Gotcha’ Steve. I felt the same way. Mine didn’t turn out nearly as clean as Moses’ did. His was phenominal! I’d like to see more of his work! Hope he gets back on soon. I’ve never tried Caviler, but have heard lots of good about it. The Atak set has a new turret, mantlet, sides, hull plates. Looks like just about everything but the deck! Number is atk3502 at GM if you want to check it out.
As they say, practice makes perfect.
Here are some pics of my first attempt at applying zimm. I used milliput, rolled out in powder, smoothed on with a brush and finger, then textured with a bit of styrene in an exacto handle. The pics are in a very high resolution so mistakes can be seen, but I did not find this method too difficult to achieve a result. From a distance it looks OK and when painted hopefully will produce the desired effect.
I first tried it on the front and back of the hull, then the sides and then the turret. As I progressed I corrected mistakes by trial and error.
I hope that this example will help others with this apparently daunting task.

I’ve got a Panther G in my stash that I want to zim. Lots of practice on some sheet styrene and an old kit before hand. It looks daunting, but I really want to give it a try. It’s a skill I really want to try to develop. There are too many interesting looking kits out there that I wouldn’t be able to do accurately without zimmerit, and I wouldn’t want to buy AM kits all the time.

Dave, not a bad attempt at all. As you say, you get better with practice. One tip, if you use masking tape over areas you don’t want putty on just yet, it makes life easier to clean up later.
Dave, you did a way better job than I did on the homemade zim. Better than my PE zim turned out. No fooling.

Grab a sheet of styrene and practice. I’m sure once you get into a rhythim it’ll come to you. Just practice. Whats styrene cost per sheet? Pretty small compared to the pay off of doing a good job on the model once you’ve practiced a bit and built up your confidence.

well after really taking a good look at zimmerit and how to apply it. i am going to order a backup, i am ordering the eduards zimmerit set for the dragon porsche king tiger.
oh yeah sorry ausf, with mine i went with the eduards pe set. really did a great job of spicing up the cockpit.

Cavalier comes in flexible sheets. I have a couple sets for some up coming projects. You apply it like a skin. Sounds like Atak is actual pieces ? Is that correct ?
