I have a subscription to a car magazine, motor trend or something like that. When it’s about to expire they start sending me cards for sweet deals and discounts, dropping the price by about 50%, maybe more. Does FSM not do that?
Duuno about a discount but I do feel that since I have a subscription I should actully get the magazine. How long ago did the thread about doog andpanzerguy being in the mag start?
It would be cool, however, they do have a business to run, and I’d rather thinking to myself that my bucks are going to cool features like that little weathering insert that came in one of the last issues.
I just got my emergency resubscribe notice a few days ago…I’m not sure if I’ll re-up, but I get bored when i don’t have the sub…
Personally, I only have a subscription because someone bought it for me as a gift. There’s little left of the FSM that I grew to love back in late 80’s and early 90’s. They have slightly redeemed themselves in the past 3 or 4 months, however. But I tell ya, if I see one more “How To Use an Airbrush” feature… well… I just might… complain more…
Hmmm. I do enjoy the magazine, but when I compare recent issues to older ones, the quality of articles seems to have declined. More style than substance. Lots of nice pictures, but few measuremants and drawings to emulate. Like someone on here said awhile back, many articles are cases of buying aftermarket items and adding them on rather than step by step on how they created something different and more detailed on their own with basic materials. The “International color and Camoflage” feature has not been around in ages.
Every time I go back to look at the older issues in my library I remember why I subscribed. Now I am not so sure as to for how much longer I will do so, and instead buy on an issue by issue basis. There is no occasional bone thrown to subscribers really.
I started that thread about 10 days ago. Doog’s being in the mag’ was a no brainer, but I didn’t want panzerguy’s work overlooked. I later found out Crockett is in the same issue.
wing_nut:Call the subscription phone # if you don’t get your issue REAL soon. They are great about getting a replacement sent ASAP. Good people over there at Kalmbach!
Manny: As far as a discount, I don’t feel we deserve it per se, either pay if your happy or cancel…HOWEVER, I do HATE it when the NEW subscribers get the discount…if anyone deserves a reduced rate (at renewal time) it should be the long time subscribers!
That’s why they are called discounts; didn’t write that we deserved it, just wanted one…And I guess one could make the case that we do look at a lot of advertising on this site, and if you got a discount, the site traffic might go up and then FSM could charge more for advertisding space on here…POWER to the MODELERS !!!
Second…I wonder in the tough times if they are having problems. I have had a sub for 3 years and I am for the first time getting e mail to renew…6 months before my current sub is up. Are they trying to infuse cash by the end of the year??
Lastly…Discount, I think they could give “something” and maybe “different levels of something” based on your participation for that year. Kinda like an end of year bonus!!
Well, I just don’t see how that would be actually justified, Manny–although I’m as much about saving money as anyone…
I don’t know if contributing to the forum would actually constitute any reason to offer a full 50% discount–because then what–they would have to discount 50% to anyone who so much as posted even once, with like a small tip, or a few photos of an old build? It just doesn’t make much sense, economically, for Kalmbach to do that.
With this economy, I figure that a LOT of guys are going to be letting subscriptions drop–and that worries the hell out of me for the future of FSM. We are–*they are --*really a “niche” market, so I don’t think that their profit margins are exceptional.
What I have often thought would be cool would be a monthly gallery of specifically forum-related builds in the print of the magaine itself.
I can’t see a discount though to forum contributors–that would open up a pandora’s box of “what constitutes a forum ‘contributor’”, and would be too easy to manipulate and abuse.
I to would be for a small discount or something as a renewing subscriber. Like the man said playboy is only $12. Heck a buck off would be nice. I wonder why I wait till the last moment to renew.[sigh]
Fine Scale Modeler is a pretty small piece of Kalmbach Publishing… However, the main reason I subscribe isn’t for the mag itself, as much as it’s for access to the “subscriber only” areas of the website… I kinda think that’s a bonus, especially for articles that are archived here from the late '90s through today, which is abut how long I’d gone between my last subscription and the current one…
50% !!! I never said 50%–heck, even I wouldn’t expect that…Anyway, this was really a light-hearted post that I purposely painted over-the-top. Just something to rant about, although I do think it is something for FSM to think about. I have noticed that most of the on-line modeling shops have slashed prices to much of their inventory to generate more sales/cash-flow—maybe in the long run offering a discount would actually be to Kalbach’s benefit…
Ahhh…Karl, now there is an idea…The forum corner…the editors pick one or two items from each area…hummm (we will never get money…might as well get some fame)
I agree in this economy getting a discount from FSM…the chances are next to zero. But at least recognize the regulars here!!! I’ll take it
