Well, not really. But I was blown away when I opened my newly purchased Dragon 1/35 King Tiger Ardennes box. Holy cow, there are a lot of pieces!! Geez!! This is the first tank model I have ever purchased. I have a new appreciation for you armor guys. I always thought a tank would be simpler to put together than an aircraft. Looks like I have my work cut out for me. Should be an interesting build, but may take me quite a while to do.
Heh…wait to you really catch the fever and start purchasing the irritating little knick knacks that make life miserable like photo-etch brass details [swg]. Good luck.
Well you’ve certainly chosen a good kit to start with.
Be patient: this kit will have many small parts and assemblies. The detail will be worth it in the end.
Go slow on the instructions: if they are like the Tiger’s, they are very busy and sometimes not exactly clear.
Any questions, ask the guys here as they are experts.
Good luck.
The kit comes with a few photo-etched parts. This will also be a first for me. I never used photo-etched stuff on my aircraft, but I’ve always wanted to. I checked out another thread on this forum about putting the tracks together. That seems like it will be a challenge in itself. Did I buy a bit to complicated of a armor kit to start out with? Or are most of them like this?
Actually, for the current state of armor modeling, the Dragon King Tigers are about average. Some of the other Dragon kits are even more complex. The offerings from Tristar would blow you out of your chair. As to whether you picked too complicated a kit to start, that’s hard to say, since we don’t know how many and what kind of A/C you’ve built; I do know some of the newer A/C kits are getting pretty complex (Tamiya’s A6M5 Zero comes to mind). So do what the others have said: study the instructions, and go slow. Don’t let the indy tracks throw you; the construction is staightforward, just repetitive. That’s the one thing armor modeling teaches you: infinite patience! Besides, the Dragon “Magic Tracks” are a lot easier to deal with than their earlier offerings. At least the “Magic Tracks” are already off the sprues and cleaned up, so you’re spared trimming excess plastic off 200 small pieces.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Most of us on here, I would guess, have built just about everything at one time or another and are happy to share their experience. So have some fun, and good luck.
Word of advice: take your time and if you get frustated, set it aside for a bit. I’ve seen many A/C guys make the transition with flying colors. I’m sure you’ll be able to do it too.
This is some good advice. I wish I would have done this on my DML initial Tiger-1. That im still working on. Have been since July…lol.[xx(] Nothing wrong with the kit, its been all me[:(!][censored].
But it’s turning out ok but not like I’ve plan.[D)] So take your time.
i built the initial tiger 1 this year and she came out as pretty as a prom queen the newer DML kits have alot of the goodies packed in so you dont Have to go looking for AM goodies if you dont want to. i myself have been building armor since 1978 with my first kit being a tamiya PanzerII with the DML kits subasembiles are your friend i find if i get stressed on say a turret i go and put together road wheels and when im REALLY stressed i put it away and work on something else so good luck on the King Kitty
Dragon has some really detailed kits, especialy some of their new one such a the Panzer IV 3 in 1, I’m a fan of Tamiya armor kits most of them are straightforward but still have good detail.
All of the advice given is good. Do take your time. I’ve read on this forum some modelers build in a week what takes me 3months but I’m happy just ploding along. Life maybe short but you dont have to rush…Kenny
Welcome to the wonderful world of Armor, also known as a.k.a.the dark side.Let you be warned once you start, you will always want to build more and more armor. There is a lot to do with armor kits but as said before, take your time and you will have lots of fun.Digger
That is a great kit just started to paint mine but take your time and it will come out great those magic tracks rock just use a straight edge when building the tracks and you’ll be fine and remember tanks rule
