I just want to say that I very much appreciate ALL of you! In our small world of fine scale modeling we appreciate and support each other. My “friends” and co-workers like my work but don’t know how to “react” or “relate”. I had a few say….”Oh I did that as a kid”.
I feel that WE grown adults are not understood for our wonderful hobby.
If you can relate or have similar experience please comment.

I sometimes reply to such unbecoming remarks with a well reasoned and insightful reply…

then sometimes not.

itisgregory, I know exactly what you mean. My two older siblings often “tease” me about still playing with toys but ever since I made a model of a Ford van that my older brother used to own and gave it to him as a Christmas present, he’s backed off from the teasing. Most people just do not understand this hobby.

You are correct….they see small plastic “toy” models and can’t grasp or appreciate the skill and patience it takes.
I think our hobby is misunderstood because it is not discussed in mainstream social media or in other online ways.
Generally only discuss with like minded folks - why the forums are so great. Otherwise it’s a solitary hobby. My wife does doll houses so we have miniatures in common there. Used to be a show on model building way back… maybe PBS? Also loved this article - modeling is actually good for us lol. Well at least us aircraft builders

keavdog, are you talking about the show “Adventures in Scale Modeling?” I have an old VHS tape of one of the episodes.(Yeah, I’m the last person to have a working VHS player)
@MR_TOM_SCHRY
I remember that show! I used to have all 3 VHS tapes of it. At least, I think there were only three? But sadly, I got rid of them ages ago.
I read the entire article. It had wonderful things to say. Thanks for sharing.
When I model and am patient then I get totally lost and forget about the outside world because I’m so focused and in the “zone”.
My wife does other crafts so she understands me but admitted that she would not have the patience. LOL
This is a reply I hear as well. It is usually followed by, “I wish I still had time to build models.” Positive memories of a wonderful hobby.

Yeah, comments like those bother me but they’re forgotten when you had a veteran a model of a vehicle/ship/plane that they used when they were in the service and you see the smile on their face.
The few time I have mentioned that I build models in my spare time I have mainly gotten the same response, I just kinda keep it to myself for the most part. I have several other hobbies that I converse about with people but it’s because they also do those things, I have yet to meet someone in my friends group or at work that is into modeling. But it’s not a team sport lol

EXACTLY my experience and thoughts. People are amazed at the fine detail but they don’t or won’t hold a conversation about our hobby. It’s like they don’t know what to say. LOL
