Hello all my fellowship modellers,
Today I just bought the B-339 Buffalo 1/48 of Tamiya. But I don’t like the camo of them. I had ever seen the yellow wing Buffalo of US Navy (F2A) and I think it look good for me. So, I needs your help that I don’t know the FS. Number of that kind of yellow because in my stock I have only Gunze sangyo acrylic base for Blue Angel yellow. Can I paint a Blue Angel Yellow instead?

i think blue angel yellow would be far too bright for that aircraft you are thinking of. a WWII navy aircraft would not have bright yellow aerobatic display plane colors on it. i cant tell you what yellow it is, but it certainly would not be blue angel yellow. unless i am mistaken, which i could be. sorry i cant be more helpful [:P]
The yellow was Chrome Yellow FS 13538, sometimes also referred to as G Orange-Yellow. It was a fairly dark yellow with an orange tint. The Blue Angels yellow is not even close to the right shade.

Look for Chrome Yellow (FS-13538)…that’s the best match. I have also used insignia yellow (FS 33538) to good effect.
Actually, the yellow used on the wings of early US Navy (and Army Air Corps) planes was darker than the modern FS 13538, more orange. But you can add a few drops of red to the easily available Chrome Yellow 13538 from Gunze Sangyo.
Just for the record, the color of those old wings was called Orange-Yellow and it was used by both services, and is the proper color for propellor tips in WW II aircraft. I have a color chip for it from the Monogram Publishing series of books on U.S. Army and Navy a/c colors.
Eagle’s Aircraft Colors, those wonderful acrylics that come in the little squeeze bottles, makes this color under the catalogue listing 3051 US Orange Yellow and I used it to excellent effect on my AcMin SBD-1 and F3F-1. It matches the chip perfectly. I love this paint, and can’t say enough about it. I just wish I didn’t have to mail order it.

Try using a coat of silver paint as a primer before painting the yellow. It gives you a better base coat for the yellow and the yellow covers easier. rangerj
I think FS13432 would be a better match for the Orange-yellow rather than the FS13538 Chrome Yellow. As sharkskin said adding a few drops of red to the Chrome Yellow will get you close.
I always use a base coat of flat white before painting yellows or reds. Gives a brighter color & faster coverage with less chance of paint build up.
Use FS 13432 if you want, but the US Navy aircraft specification of the period had the upper wings painted in FS 13538, which in the 1930’s was called G Orange-Yellow & today is called Chrome Yellow. In theory, it made a downed aircraft at sea more visible for search & rescue. It’s still the same color based on the chips I have. Much of the art work showing that period aircraft have the wings depicted in the wrong color, a lighter less orange tint yellow. Also, some of the Model paints marketed as Chrome Yellow don’t match the color chip, so you really can’t trust the paint suppliers if you are a stickler for accuracy.

Don’t worry about the name. The name is same but the shade is difference. May be you should know the FS. Number for reference or a guide[:D]
I know that this post is old but I have done a lot of research on this color. I reality, Cub Yellow, Crome Yellow, American Schoolbuss Yellow, AN Yellow, and finally FS X3538 are the same color. There were other names used also such as Trainer yellow, AN 4, AN 506, AN 614 are a few more. This color has been used since the early part of the 18 century world wide.
