Yamato in 1/350

The monster is done! I finished it today. The only thing left to do is have a nameplate engraved for the base, and build a dust cover.

For a refresher for those that didn’t follow the build. I took the Tamiya 1/350 Yamato kit, which comes as she looked when she was sunk in April 1945.

And backdated it to how she looked when commissioned in Dec 1941.

I replaced the deck with a scratchbuilt wooden deck. I replaced all the 18in main gun barrels with turned brass barrels from Lionroar. The PE is mostly Gold Medal Models with some Lionroar on the turrets. I had to buy a 2nd kit to use as a donor for some of the parts.

It’s not 100% accurate. Some of the inaccuracies are due to kit molding that would have been too difficult to fix. And some due to my own mistakes. But I’m not gonna list them here. I fully documented the build with over 200 progress photos. I posted them all on another forum.

Nice work. Looks good. That’s one big boat. I got 1/200 Yamato still in the box that I’m afraid to touch. Your work gives me some inspiration.

Beautiful piece of work! I really admire your scratchbuilding prowess…and imagination for wanting to ‘retro’ such a huge kit!

Hi,

Thanks for posting your work. To my eyes, it looks great! If you could, please post a link to where you have the build progress posted. Also, the plans shown in your photos, did you purchase those AM, or did they come with the kit?

Thanks again for the inspiration!

Cheers, Rick

Sorry it took so long to get back with you on your questions. I’m a truck driver and was on the road.

My main reference for this project was: Anatomy of a Ship, The Battleship Yamato. By Janusz Skulski

The plans are in that book. 1/600 scale Along with plans for just about every fitting on the ship. I wouldn’t have tried this project without the book.

Here is where you’ll find my progress pics, 10 pages of them.
