XP-80 Conversion (@ 1/48 of course)?

Anyone know of an XP-80 Shooting Star conversion at 1/48 scale? Something that allows one to convert an F-80 or T-33 kit to the XP-80?

The only difference I’ve noted is that the XP-80 did not have the fuel pods on the wing tips like the F-80 (hanging fuel pods) or T-33 (covering the wing tips).

Hey Quag,
I knew it was a few years ago but FSM had an article of a step by step XP-80 conversion. Well he gives yaw an over all breakdown.
If I am not mistaken he used the Monogram F-80 as the platform for the article. I’ll see if I still have that issue.
Lookin forward to seeing your progress pix.
Flaps up, Mike

That would be great if you could find that article. I’ve already started the designs of the custom decals myself in photoshop. Here’s a (large) pic of what I will be trying to achive.

Yes, another plane with the word “TEST” on the side for me. [:D] Just like the XF8F-1 Bearcat a while back.

Probably won’t get started on this one 'til December or January so don’t hold your breath on the progress pics. Golf season is here and that means very little, if any, modeling. Besides, the B-25 comes next.

Ahhh Golf, the thwack of leather against willow and the , no, wait a minute, that’s cricket.
Golf means smaller balls and more bad language. How could I confuse the two?
P S looking forward to January and your XP 80.

Butz - I’m interested to see what issue of fsm that conversion article was in (cos I dont think I have it [V]).

Quag - great idea & excellent choice of subject - cant wait to see the a/c!

Quagmire,
I’ve had a look through all the FSM indexes and couldn’t find any article on the XP-80 conversion -
That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist - just means I couldn’t find it.
Maybe someone else has a better memory and can find the article,
Sorry, mate.

The only article I remember that mentions the XP-80 was the one a few years ago about the aviation artist who uses the models to model his pictures. Sorry I don’t remember what issue it was or what the guys name was either. I would hunt through my stack of modeling magazines, but the cat mistook the box they were in for the litter box, and I’m not digging through that mess, thank you very much!![:(][censored]

Couldn’t find an XP80 conversion. Found an XP47H kit though. Hmmmmm…

If I remember correctly (and that’s probably iffy - seem to be having more and more senior moments), the article was about converting the Monogram F-80 to a 1945/46 P-80A and I think it was by Bob Steinbrunn.

Got curious and did some checking. The article you are looking for is in the Jan 1989 issue of FSM.

“Building the Lockheed YP-80A in 1/48 Scale” by Bob Steinbrunn, p 42

Hope this helps

AND QMIESTER IS THE WINNER! [:D]

I checked the back issues online and no luck. Actually, now that we know where to find it, would anyone mind photocopying the article and mailing it to me? If you can, click on my email icon below and I’ll send you my mailing addy along with reimbursment for postage and copying. Anyone?

qmiester saves the day…!!![:p][:p][;)]. Yup thats the issue that it was in. You’ve done good.
Flaps up, Mike

If I’m not mistaken there was something different with the intakes, but minor. I’ll have to check my Issue when I get home.

1989 [:0] - bloody hell - that’s way before my modelling time. Wouldn’t mind scoping that article out too, if it aint to much trouble!

Ouch! I guess it has been a while, 15 years! Thought that article was only 5 or 6 years ago. Durn, I’m getting old!
