Does anyone own the XP-54 model from Planet Models? If so, how did you get a hold of one? I’m trying to get my grubby hands on one but I can’t find any distibutors which has them. The Planet web site shows this in their kit selection but I don’t see anywhere on their site which allows you to “click-n-order” from them.
Thanks for the post! Believe it or not, I saw this same information and wrote to all of them on Friday. So far only Stevens International has written back saying they do not have the XP-54. In fact, they said they only deal with Planet’s plastic kits, not the resin ones. I haven’t heard back from the others yet. Hopefully they will respond. I hadn’t even thought of checking out Roll Models though! Thanks for the tip! I will contact them in a few minutes. Thank you again for the lead!
John, thank you for the tip. I checked it out but unfortunately they did not have a listing for it. In fact, a whole bunch of their Planet Model offerings were out of stock/unavailable. They’re sure proving to be be quite elusive!
I also checked Roll Models and they didn’t have a listing either. I’d like to get the cheaper 1/72 version from Planet. I like this oddball airplane and it would go great with my XP-55 and XP-56. I don’t often like to pay a lot for my models but I’m wondering if I’m going to have to pony up the $109 for the Collect-Aire kit.
Anyone have any experiences with Collect-Aire and the quality of their kits?
Did you contact Planet direct to see if the kit is still being made?
They do list an e-mail address on their site.
I have never made a Collect-Aire kit but have heard good reports about them.
I have a number of the Collect-Aire kits. They are sometimes pretty good, and other times a challenge, not all masters are done by the same individuals. The XB-51 is one of the worst that I have, the fit is pretty bad on the fuselage. I don’t have the XP-54. The 1/32 T-38 looks pretty good in the box and test fits pretty good. Why haven’t I built that one. Love the T-38. If I was a gazillionair I’d have a real one.
Thank you Mucker! I had never heard of that site before. I saw their listing for it and it certainly is cheaper than the $76 (+ or -) that Hannants was asking for. I’m sort of torn as to which one to get: the 1/72 Planet kit or the 1/48 Collect-Aire kit. I have Planet’s 1/72 XP-67 Moon Bat which built up into an awesome little kit. The 1/72 XP-54 would look great next to it. However, I also have Czech Model’s 1/48 XP-56 Black Bullet (another awesome kit!) and the Collect-Aire kits would look superb next to that one.
After giving it much thought I think I’m going to pony up the extra money and get the Collect-Aire kit. I ONLY do this because the good Lord has seen fit to bestow upon me a bit of inheritance from a kind great grandmother. That and a loving wife who has given me permission especially with our one income family. So this will be my birthday, Easter, Christmas, Groundhog’s Day and National Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day gift for the year. I have heard that the Collect-Aire kits can be a hit or miss experience. I figure I’ve got a 50/50 shot, right? ha-ha-ha! So with those odds in mind, I’m going to take the plunge.
However, I’m going to bookmark that hobbytron site so I can browse around when I’m allowed to get another model kit in '09. LOL!
Hey guys and guyettes! Just one last little update here. I wanted to let everyone know that I got on the phone with the friendly folks at Collect-Aire and ordered the 1/48 XP-54 Swoose Goose. I do have one little complaint about their operation though. The guy forced me to order their 1/48 XP-67 Moon Bat. How did he get me to do this? By asking “Will there be anything else?” So watch out for this tactic! I caved. I was bad. I asked if they still had the Moon Bat and they did. $262 and two models later, I was off the phone.
Now can someone please ask me why do we do this to ourselves?!?!
ARRRRGH, indeed, matey! LOL!
Eric
PS. The kits should be arriving early next week. Just as an FYI, I’ll let everyone know what one gets for that much money. I’ll give a little “in-box review”. If the kits look great then I’ll let you all know. If not then I’ll warn you. If we’re going to be spending that much money on kits then I think we all need to get the word out on all the good, the bad and the ugly. I only phrased it that way because I watched that movie last night. [:)]
I’m going to try and post some pics with an in-box review once I get them. I’m hoping that’ll be by this weekend but the guy at Collect-Aire was thinking it would be more like Monday. Boooo! Anyway, I’ll let you know how it looks once I get them.
