XFY-1 POGO, VTOL

  • This is the KoPro 1/72 scale of the Convair XFY-1 VTOL of the mid 1950s. I started it several years ago and just recently dug it out of a storage bin and decided to finish it. It went together fairly well with minimum putty or parts mismatch. The only real criticism I have is that the propeller blades are WAY to skinny. - I used Bare Metal Foil in several different shades for nearly all of the finish. I had the foil in my stash for probably 10 years and it had some scratches and wrinkles in it that I thought I could remove during application. WRONG!!! That stuff is VERY unforgiving and if you want a top quality finish, you will have to start with a blemish free sheet.

Great work. Love the nmf.

Looks great! I remember when the prototype was being hailed as the aircraft of the future

I covered a model (an airliner) with foil once- and swore never again. I have found Alclad much easier to work with and I get a better finish than I did with the BMF.

Your BMF job looks so much better than mine! Seriously. I was working on the Laird-Turner Meteor and was about 98% done covering it up with foil. At that point I was like “Who am I kidding? This doesn’t look very good at all” and I stripped it all off. You’re right. The foil has to be nearly blemish-free even before you apply it.

Great job on the Pogo. I often wondered how a wounded pilot was supposed to land his damaged Pogo after returning from a sortie.

That’s a beautiful bird!
