XB-70 Valkerie WIP 1/72 Italeri kit

Yeah if you have the canopy on, can’t see it at all. I’m not going to glue the canopy in place, so I can take it off to see the pilots better. But yeah I could still fix it.

The stand painted

Great display idea. Really gives the idea of the sheer size of the XB-70.

Felt so guilty I went back and fixed it! Those nuns back Catholic grade school would be proud!
Found another weird dimple on one of the tail control surfaces, fixing that now.

Hey Jim,

I hope it wasn’t me causing that guilt by my comments….you’ve accomplished way more than I have this year, so I’m in no position to point fingers.:face_with_peeking_eye: Can’t wait to see it all come together.

Ha ha! Absolutely not! I’m a good Catholic so I’m completely able to manufacture self guilt out of nothing! Again, years of Catholic grade school and HS paying it’s dividends!!! LOL

Almost done with decals, only have a few more to put on the underside.

And finished off the rough spots on the nose

The only thing left is to add the few remaining decals, seal with clear, and add a panel wash, and a few weathering bits and then I’m calling it done.

Those decals on the escape hatches really show off that small detail, but brings so much life to the model. The overall look is really nice, hard to do with a single colour scheme.

You’ve really brought this rough kit to life! Good job!

Nearing the finish line, congratulations. You’ve earned a vacation after wrestling with this build. It has turned out great!

Add the final paint, the under side metal? I don’t know what it was in real life? Titanium? Inconel? Aluminum?

base coat of semigloss black, all out of gloss black…

Then thought I’d try these new metal acylics I got

I’ve never used something like this, but damn that sure seems shiny! It’s too much for this, so will need another layer of something to adjust that.

Anyone else ever use them? They claim to be acrylic?

Those do look like they have incredibly fine pigment and would be good for some projects. How well do they clean up in the airbrush? I’m always concerned about metallic residue left in paintbrushes and the airbrush.

So this is after about 10 hours of drying, still a touch tacky, but it’s almost mirror like, with the exception of the spot I tried roughing up with sanding stick

Trying to layer in some color

It does seem to clean ok, but I cleaned the brush immediately. It did seem to gunk up a bit in the paint cup, but it cleaned pretty easily. I do not know what would have happened if I had forgotten to clean and left it for an hour or two?

When I used the brush today it seemed fine, no residue. But I don’t really know if this stuff is acrylic or not.

But I’m definitely going to use it when I do the Terminator models!

Did a quick search and it says they’re alcohol-based paints and you should use IPA to clean your airbrush.

Does Iwata Medea air brush cleaner qualify? Or do you need to use straight IPA?

I would assume so since it says, “Clean with dedicated airbrush cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.”

Your mileage may vary…

Such a cool plane. I really like the tonal variations you achieved. White isn’t always the easiest to work with. This looks fantastic!

Did it really have those tonal variations? Asking, because 1. I have this kit in my stash, and 2. every picture I’ve seen shows what appears to be a pretty nice gloss white finish. That 'nice finish could just be the white ‘blowing out’ the film of the day. Thanks.

No probably not. Personally I think I overdid it. I tried to tone it down some, but I still think I was little too heavy handed. But, about a year ago I built a 1/144 scale Airbus 380, and it was white, so I painted her gloss white. Didn’t like the look at all, it looked like a toy, even with all the decals and some color for stripes. So for this one I tried to put in some pre-shading to help it look a little better. But you’re definitely right that the real world photos make it whiter than mine.

There’s one or two spots in the second photo that look a little grimy? But still not as exaggerated as mine.
