WWI German pilot uniform color?

CAn anyone give me a basic uniform color for a WWI German pilot? I am getting ready to paint one to go along with a recent 1/48 A/C build and I do not have much experience with figures. TIA! [tup]

A pilot in the Luftstreitkräfte usually retained the uniform and rank of his prior service. Most were Army uniforms. A mouse gray will do it for the walking out uniform… Is your pilot figure wearing the uniform or a flightsuit? Flightsuits in WW1 are a different animal, ranging from coveralls to fur suits that make a pilot look like h’s wearing a gorilla suit…

I am planning on using Vallejo colors, so if you could point me in a general direction with a color call-out for their paints, that would really help too! [:D]

That’s going to be cool Frank! Vallejo colors? Are they pretty good? I’m really trying to improve on my figures. Those WW I crates are giving me the heeby jeebies! This guy looks like he is wearing Model Master Afrika Korps colors with a face done in oils.

#907 Pale gray-blue looks about right to me, if monitor colors can be trusted…

Remember that is a 1/32 scale figure (or larger) that was used for the prototype figure. The 1/48 scale figure will have less detail.

Thanks Stephen, I’ll keep that in mind. Though I must admit, with my mediocre (at best!) figure painting skills, he’ll be lucky to still look like a Jasta pilot in the end! [D)]

Hi Stephen (and others),

You said “the 1/32 figure (or larger) was used as the prototype”. I’m guessing you are referring to the technique of sculpting something large and ‘pantographing’ it down. That is common for injection molding. However, this is not the case for our figures.

Both the 1/48 and 1/32 Voss figures were sculpted completely from scratch by Mike Good. They were sculpted EXACTLY in the size that they come in the box. That is, the resin casting is an EXACT reproduction of the original artwork. …and in fact, the 1/48 figure was done first!! Then, I said to Mike we need one for the 1/32 scale kit, and so he followed up with a second sculpt.

Amazingly, there is no less detail on the 1/48 compared to the 1/32. …and for a sculptor to sculpt the same figure twice, IN 2 DIFERENT SCALES, and have them come out so similar is truly amazing! When you think about THAT, it really hits home that Mike is truly a master at what he does, and gives a new appreciation of his sculpting talent.

Hans- I finally made it over to my LHS that carries Vallejo. Believe it or not, out of the hundreds of bottles in stock (all racks were full except 907) then one I need was OOS? [|(]

The Wool socks on Voss confuse me, are they Burgundy wool or a green wool?
