WWI Aviation Image Archive

Greetings all;
It seems that some here are unfamiliar with rigging WWI aircraft. My first recommendation is to study original photos. So I am providing a link to aRon Filan’s image site. Good stuff maynard! Enjoy!

hey thanks for the great link! really cool photos

Yep, thanks a lot!

Thanks for the link. Could be very helpful.

Not much on WWI modeling, I’ve kept to WWII and post year aircraft mostly, but while working in an environmental lab doing field work, I happened upon an alternative rigging
source for biplanes, etc. The equipment we used called a GC or Gas Chromatograph had a coil of xxxxxtremely fine tubing used for the flame analysis of the materials being brought in. The coil measured, if I remember correctly, .030 inches in diameter by 300 meters in length. It was wound very carefully into a coil about 4 inches in diameter and cost between 1000.00 to 2000.00 bucks. WOW! Not cheap, but when the coils had to be replaced the broken ends or pieces could be salvaged and I played with them a bit on a throw away kit. The tubing is glass, but it is flexible enough to bend and not break, sometimes. If a side is scored or scratch the tubing is easier to break, but normal diagonal cutters work well enough. I found the tubing took super glue well, didn’t sag, and was pretty close to scale on some 1/48 kits and very close on 1/32 kits. If you have a source in a lab somewhere nearby, see if they will let you have the broken pieces and give it a try. 7c6
