WW2 Fanatic

Hello, I am an amateur model builder but have built a few models. I am not very experienced with some of the techniques. I enjoy building only model airplanes from the WW2 era! My most recent completed model was a 1:48 scale PBY Catalina. Question: Does anybody have some good tips on how to make the exhaust around the engine cowlings look realistic?
Thanks,
appsmaniac

Welcome, I think you have come to the right place for your model info needs. I like to use earth tone pastel chalks for that type of effect. File or sand a little powder off your pastel stick and brush it on with the right size, soft bristle brush. The look is great and can be built up gradually, making it perfect for a new modeler. Just seal the model as you normally would and your done.[:D]

Can’t help with your question appsmaniac … but I can welcome you to FSM.

If you post this question in the Aircraft Forum … you are more likely to get an answer.

Enjoy the forums!!!

Welcome to FSM apps,

Haven’t done any WWII plane myself but I keep woody’s tip in mind just in case.

Stick around and have fun.

Welcome! Am as new as you are in FSM but not in modeling. Built my first kit in 1969 and just like you a WW II fan, aircraft in 1/72. Woody’s tip is one nice way to go at it. What I used to do before is mix bronze or copper paint with black and it’ll give that burnt exhaust look. Now I’d probably replace the exhaust with a copper tubing of the same diameter and wash it with black if you want it weathered. Happy modeling!

Welcome to the wonderful FSM forum, appsmaniac ! Great to have another 1/48 WW II aircraft modeler (that’s all I do) You’ll find some great tips from some wonderful people here. HAVE FUN !

Welcome to the forums, appsmaniac.

Would like to see some pics of that Catalina!

Woody, thanks for the tips I am sure they all will come in handy in future builds. Where would you look to buy these pastels you use on yours models, are they regular artist pastels, or can you buy them at a modeling store?
thanks,
appsmaniac

I buy mine at Hobby Lobby, but any place that caters to artist/painters should carry them. If all else fails do a web search for Dick Blick, it is an art supply store and they will send you a huge catalog for the asking. Blick is also a great place to buy premium paint brushes.[;)]

Welcome appsmaniac I build WW2 aircraft also and I use charcol for the exhaust.
What you should do first is to practice on a older kit or a piece of scrap until you get the desired effect you look for. Or else you will wreck a good model

Welcome to FSM. Always glad to have another a/c modeller in the fold.
