WW2 British desert camo

Ok people, I need a bit of guidance on a couple of things relating to Monty’s lads in North Africa: 1. What would be the closest colour match for the Brits’ desert yellow? 2. What is the other colour supposed to be in their ‘splinter’ scheme? I have 4 British tank kits (so far) & all 4 call for a different colour, ranging from light blue, to light grey, medium grey & slate grey. In fact Italeri’s Crusader mentions both light & med grey for the splinter with khaki/olive green on top of the turret. Thanks in advance Shaun

Check out the three links on British cammo on this site, http://www.mafva.org.uk/Resources.asp and also this page http://www.matadormodels.co.uk/tank_museum/xcamo_ww2uk.htm . Both the White Ensign Models Colour Coats and Hannants Xtracolor ranges have specific “Caunter” scheme shades. How closely they are matched I can’t say.

Shaun: one thing you’ll notice in the links that Geoff gave you is that the “light blue” portion of the Caunter scheme has been debunked. Mr. Starmer’s research is quite phenomenal! It’s quite a read.

There was a beautiful pic of a Matilda II on:

It carried the blue color. I’ve seen lots of pics of the Matilda w/blue and it is not accurate? I’m surprised someone who served in them would have let the blue “flourish” as it has.

Are any of the Humbrol colors decent matches for the colors used on Caunter schemes or later ones? Xtracolor’s and White Ensign paints are not easily found on this side of the Atlantic, but Humbrol’s are…[;)] Good info on those links!

I guess one has to determine whether the egg or chicken came first. Just because a restorer used blue doesn’t mean that his source was a well researched wartime document. The sky blue was generally accepted for a very long time. I believe Mr. Starmer’s reports were the first to refute the sky blue and I’m not aware of any verified wartime caunter scheme photo. Have a read and tell me what you think. It’s pretty compelling to me…

oops sorry about the grammar. I meant that the picture I saw on the site carried the blue color. I didn’t mean for it to sound like i was the authority on it. sorry about that .

… Unfortunately neither of those sites lists the correct colour scheme that was used after the cancellation of the 3 colour striped “Caunter” pattern. This was “light stone” only … “patterns in Slate similar to Caunter” did not exist.
