I’m working on two (1 Early WW II & 1 Late WW II) US Fleet subs. Both are based on Revell’s “Lionfish” kit (of ancient vintage). I’ve got two PE sets, two different resin conning towers, two different basswood decks and two sets of custom PE’s for the limber hole detail on the superstructure. Now my questions are:
The propellers are counter-rotating, but which one is clockwise? Port or Starboard?
Exterior torpedo tube doors. I can’t find any reference works that show the appearance. Does anyone know of a source for photos that show the doors?
The bow planes have a support brace. It would seem to me that the external end of this would have to be articulated in some way, but, again, I can’t find any pictures. Does anyone know of a souce that would show this?
Any suggestions for the display base? On sailing ships I’ve built I’ve used two or three brass lamp finials to support the hull. Somehow I don’t think that this would look good.
Hi stpete,
Try any of these great submarine sites, you should find something you can use there… www.battlebelow.comwww.navsource.org/archives/subidx
best is www.rddesigns.com/subs/legends.
I use drydock style planking on a wood base, or like you I will use brass finials too.
On most boats but not all… the Starboard screw was clockwise…
Good Luck.
Another info source would be The Subcommittee, a group of highly dedicated sub lovers. Also, I have quite a few pictures of the USS COBIA which is in Manitowauk(?), Wisconsin and the USS BOWFIN in Pearl Harbor, if you would be interested in some of those, send me an email.
At the USS BOWFIN museum in Pearl, there is a nine foot nine inch replica of a fleet boat which has one side open and probably has almost every single detail that existed on a real boat. It is awesome!
