Having a strange paint problem that I can’t quite figure out. I’m using a mineral spirit based lacquer (Alclad II) and it keeps wrinkling up as it dries. It has only happened in some areas of the model, the bottom side got a perfect coat. I sanded the wrinkled areas, cleaned the surface and just attempted to spray over it and it started happening again. I’ve used Alclad paints several times before and have had really good results, except for now.
Usually wrinkling (real wrinkles, not just roughness) indicates an incompatibility with a paint underneath. What did you prime plastic with?
I primed with Krylon gray, out of the can. Then a coat of Alclad II gloss black, then Alclad II aluminum. I waited several days between coats.
It was a really cold day when it happened and I paint in my garage with the door open. I had wondered about the temp, but what I’ve read says heat and high humidity is more of a problem.
Boy, those materials should be compatible. They are what I always use, and I never had Alclad wrinkle. Indeed, I would suspect the extreme coldness. I see warnings all the time about minimum paint temperatures.
