There’s some amazing footage of the wreckage of the USS Yorktown CV-5 on you tube. The Yorktown sank at the Battle of Midway.
I have been watching the survey of it being done by NOAA on UTube. Its fascinating that they found a 1940 Ford Woody station wagon in the hangar and wondered if it was a personal car for Admiral Fletcher or some other brass. Even more ironic that it would have been allowed on board at a time when space for planes and munitions was at a premium.
The guys on the video were also debating about a wing and if it belongs to a Wildcat or TBD and if a triangular part on the flight deck was an extension for storing aircraft off the flight deck or if it was one of the arresting gear stantions.
This is the kind of rabbit hole that is easy to drop into. I’ll often run videos such as these, or Mark Felton’s war videos, while I’m at work much like I would be listening to music.
