Hi fellas, I am an avid plastic car, motorcycle and passive avation scale modeller, but my Dad is really into the wooden clipper ships. I turned him on to this site and he did visit, but expressed some disapointment because he could only find one post concerning wooden ship kits. Can anyone here relay some websites that address wooden shipbuilding with more enthusiasm? I’m kind of curious too, as I’ve been looking into some of the “starter” kits, and to be honest, I could easily branch off to some of this myself. Thanks in advance!
There is a huge site dedicated to wooden ship building. It is called Drydock Models. Sorry, don’t have the url handy. I do both plastic and wooden and have visited it many times.

All the above-mentioned sites have plenty of good material on them - along with a certain percentage of information that, in my opinion, is a bit dubious. That’s the nature of web forums; heaven forbid that somebody should ever start trying to pass judgment on everything that gets posted on them.
I do think it would be worth the trouble to peruse this site a bit more thoroughly before writing it off, though. We’ve actually had quite a few lively discussions about wood ship models - and there are two threads in the “Group Builds” section dealing with specific wood kits: the Model Shipways Sultana and Phantom. I personally like the FSM forum because it welcomes all sorts of modelers. I quit taking partin the Drydock Models forum when the management announced that all posts dealing with plastic models, or subjects other than “TallShips” (whatever in the world that term means) would be deleted.

“Woodships”, “plasticships”, “tallships”, whateverships. The primary difference is the materials used for the hull, deck furniture, small boats, etc. Once past that, the rigging is virtually identical. I suppose, wood ship modelers think they have an exclusive ownership (“dealership”, “oneupsmanship”) on rigging techniques, but the reality is that many plastic ship modelers do as accurate a rigging job as any of the woodship modelers. There’s a lot of really good rigging information here, as well as painting, displaying, etc. of ship models. So, while the debate over wood, Vs plastic may not contain much “sportsmanship”, here you will find “seamanship”, a good “membership”, and best of all " friendship",… which also happens to be a type of sloop.
I agree, www.drydockmodels.com is an excellent source of information and inspiration.
I think you’ll find The Shipmodeling Forum to be the best choice. [:)]
