wood decks

Hi guys, was just wondering if there is any surface preperation needed to stick on those adheasive wood decks. Should i scuff on the plastic and clean it before peeling the backing paper of the deck and sticking it on? or should it be a smooth surface?

Also, how long generally will the adeasive stick to the ship! I hope it doesnt start to come off in a few years! whats your experiences using the stuff?

thanks =)

Just based on general knowledge of adhesives, I’d scuff the surface of the plastic w/ steel wool, spray a light layer of 3M 77 and then tack on the deck. With most contact jobs, you want to make sure the surface is clean & oil free, scuff lightly & make sure both sides have an even coating of the adhesive, letting it dry to just tacky. It’s difficult fo reposition, so make sure you’re alignment is on or you have room to trim excess.

There was a thread regarding installation of Pontos wood decks by the companies owner. It’s not there any more but I saved it:

How to use Pontos wooden deck…

At first peel off the back film from the wooden deck.

Be careful in touching finger on the adhesive side, this may result in reducing adhension.

And then Spray pure water on the adhesive side of woodendeck and surface of palstic kit deck.

and carefully apply wooden deck on the surface of plastic deck.

Water make in possible in adjusting the location easily as water sliding decal.

after fitting is finished remove water as water sliding decal.

You can use hot air (with as warm hair drier) for drying the water.

After some days or weeks there may be peeled off area, in this case you can fix slightly with instant glue for this.

Thank you

Kim

thanks for that instruction, i never thought of putting water to apply it though? hope it doesnt affect the adheasive. Do you guys seal the deck? spray a satin coat over it? I need to paint markings over the wood so im not sure what to do

If the kit deck you are applying the wooden deck over has raised panel/plank lines instead of engraved ones, you may want to sand the existing plank lines off before applying the deck. The instructions for my Encore Olympia suggested this. Followed the instructions- do not know if it helped or not, but the deck went down very nicely, and seem to be holding well.

Pontos has been mentioned in this thread. I ordered the Pontos accessory set for my Zvezda Dreadnought, and noticed how much it looks like the stuff included with the Olympia. Anyone know of Pontos made the stuff for the Olympia?
