Wood deck advice (Pontos vs. Artwox)

I’m considering a ‘first time’ wooden deck replacement, for my Revell 1/350 Emden, with both of the above being readily available. Anyone used either? Any thoughts of one versus the other…or things to look out for?

Any input would be appreciated.

I did not use a wooden deck on my Emden- I built it about twenty years ago before those wooden decks were available. Great kit, one of my favorite builds (won several trophies with it).

I did use a Pontos deck on my HMS Dreadnought, however. It worked fine, no problems. I would buy a Pontos deck again.

I’ve had both the kit and the GMM etch for some time. Since there are now some excellent gun replacements available from Shapeways, I figured now might be the time to dust the project off and get to it.

I’ve had pretty good success printing decks just on paper card…but the Emden’s deck-space is modest enough that I thought it might be an excellent ‘test’ subject to give the wood decks a shot.

The main guns were the only trouble spot I had in the build. I hope the Shapeway set works better. I also used the GMM PE set. Worked great!

Greg, I built the Emden & used Artwox. It is a little bugger. Here it is.

The Model Dockyard has immation wooden decks for the HMS HOOD and HMS NELSON, plus most of the major German battleships of WW II

If it’s not too late, I would like to throw my 2 cents in.

I’ve had both and personally I prefer the Pontos because the thickness is less on theirs versus the ArtWok deck. The thickness is my major complaint with any of the wood decks. All of the bollards and deck furniture just doesn’t look right. I love the variation of the colors but at 1/350 or 1/700 it looks too bulky.

That being said, for some of the models like the 1/350 Yamato or Prince of Wales where the seams are difficult and/or impossible to hide then I’m all in.
