Wood Boxes

hi guys

I have some wooden boxes that are plastic and was wondering what would be the best way to paint them to look like real wood? would anybody have any tips or suggestions on colors to use? and maybe some pics?

here’s what CAN be accomplished.

The block got a coat of MM Wood enamel. next is a thin coat of acrylic burnt umber and before it dries too much I lightly rubbed it with a Scotch Bite scouring pad to roughly scrape the paint letting the wood come thru a bit. Then a burnt sienna wash and a dark gray dry brush.
