I’ve decided to start a new photo thread of sorts. For those who enjoy flight sims you’ll probably like this and even if you don’t… you may get a kick out of some of the images here.
If anyone else would like to post some of their screens here, feel free. Also, I’m going to try my hand at skinning in the near future and hope to show some of my handiwork here. That should keep it somewhat on-topic as regards modeling… loosely at least.
Anyhoo, I just picked up Pacific Fighters last week and can now fly my beloved Hawk 81. (P-40B/C) Tonight I tried out a few custom skins on the Hawks and went for a whirl with a three-ship to do a bit of formation flying with some B-17Ds.
That’s pretty cool…I’ve just gotten into photoshop for taking pics for my models. It’s a fun field to become involved in, especially since my photography skills are abysmal.
Photoshop… ever since I got a copy (Thanks Pix!) it’s put a whole new spin on some of my hobbies and created a new one. I’ll be using it to do skinning and have used it to mess around with some of the screenshots to create artwork of sorts. I’m also going to do some work with models, like you mentioned… if I can ever get anything built! LOL
Anyhoo, here’s the next couple images from the P-40/B-17 formation flight. All three Hawks have custom skins which are mostly well done. Although I’m going to modify them so they’re a bit more accurate. They’re for the 55th PS, 20th PG with the squadron COs ship in the foreground which I was flying on this flight…
Hmmm… I dunno what the default screenshot key is in the game. You can take screens by hitting the ‘Print Scrn’ button and then opening Paint and pasting the image into the palette. But you can only do one shot at a time that way and it’s a pain in the rear.
I use a screenshot utility called Gadwin Printscreen. You can take as many shots as you want and designate which button to use and also a folder in which to store the images, among other things.
I’d recommend saving your flights as tracks and then taking screens from the track, as the game usually minimizes each time you take a screen.
Those are awesome…thanks for posting more. BTW I love photoshop b/c it allows me to fudge it and make it look like my models are worth a darn. Placing a sepia tone over everything makes it look old, authentic, and forgives build mistakes.
Hey no prob. I hope some folks get a kick outta this.
I’ve not done the Photoshop thing with models yet (well… once…) but I’ve done it with screenshots as well as with modern photos of real subjects. You’re right, it does lend a little extra something and can definitely help to hide bad stuff!
This isn’t a ‘serious’ effort but I played around with the first image in this thread and got somewhat decent results…
Anyhoo, here’s some shots of a madman in a B-25 tearing up a couple of airfields and other targets on ‘Okinawa’…
I wouldn’t have been able to edit out all the on-screen text in a short period of time so I left it in. I’ll have to plan ahead next time and turn all that stuff off.
The skin on this B-25 is for the 1st ACG and, although fairly accurate in and of itself, it doesn’t belong on this particular variant of the B-25. It was made for the B-25H but that’s not flyable in the game, which really sucks! I would like to get a flyable strafer in the game, especially the cannon-toters.
Anyhoo, I had to make do with a B-25J which ain’t too awful bad… at least you have the package guns and one fixed gun in the nose…
Yes it’s just as good as FB, in my opinion anyway. Gameplay isn’t any different, really. The menus are basically the same but with different background and music. I dig the music on this one. The Midi stuff from the older games is pretty boring and uninspired. I do, however, usually wind up using custom tracks sometimes…
One neat thing about this game is that you can either install it separately or as an add-on to FB. This makes for some cool dogfights between say, 190s and Franks.
As to Zippos… the Jap planes do seem to flame a bit easier than most others, yes. It depends on the type… the early Zero can go up like nuthin’, true to the original. Others aren’t as easy to burn, although I haven’t tried all the aircraft in the game yet, either flying or fighting.
I can say that I was certainly shocked while flying a Rufe… I just blew up without any warning whatsoever. First time that’s happened to me but as long as it’s pretty much historically accurate… I ain’t gonna complain!
I have forgotten battle gold pack and thee have several versions of the spit and a few Hurri to fly… I am gonna have to get the pacific one Wolf so we can fly together… I am a tad better at that then moh
It’s a deal Jeff… I’m actually not very good at this, so you can wax my tail…
Caveman, besides Spits and Hurris there are Beaufighters. I’m drawing a blank here… I thought there were others but I’m at my Sis’ house at the moment and can’t check.
I wish there were Mossies not only for shipping strikes and prison breakouts but for night operations as well. I like to do some nightfighting now and again and I’m trying to figure out how to turn the nav lights off on all the other aircraft when flying at night. After all, there’s no fun in tracking the bad guys down if you can see 'em plain as day.
Would be nice if there was some sorta AI set for nightfighters too. (Air Intercept, not Artificial Intelligence) Maybe a Lancaster or Halifax for some area bombing… H2S and Oboe sets… Monica… Gee… sheesh, I want a nightfighter sim now!
I’ve got some cool screens of night fighting sorties… I’ll see if I can post 'em soonly…
Fyi… i think for most sims you can take a screen shot by hitting ALT + S.
At least that’s how you did it in Warbirds and AcesHigh…
The image would then be placed in the programs folder, where you would just go grab it and move it to whatever folder you want to store them in…
Cool stuff Steve! I’m a Pacific Fighters addict. I can’t count the number of times that I’ve attacked that Okinawa field and ships. I’m with ya on the rather limited flyable twin variants - especially the lack of a flyable “H”.
