No, you pretty much had it right Darwin. This is ‘Black 6’, a Bf 109G-2/Trop that was in flying condition until an accident back in 1997, photos of which you can see HERE. The accident photos are at the bottom of the page.
It wasn’t so much a question of whether or not the aircraft could have been restored again to airworthy condition, but rather whether or not it should be flown again. Messerschmitt 109s aren’t as plentiful as Mustangs. It’s a bit more complicated than that, as there were other considerations, but that’s the basic gist.
Speaking of airworthy 109s, Here’s a few others that have flown over the last ten years or so…

‘White 14’ is currently hangared only about 30-45 minutes away from my house. Yippee!!
Here’s another Emil that’s recently been restored to airworthy condition in England, dunno if it’s flown yet, though…

No, it’s not fake in any way. I use Photoshop for a number of tasks, including routine image cleanup. The image of ‘Black 6’ was a bit yuck-o and needed a bit of cleanup and enhancement.
In case anyone is interested, here’s ‘Black 6’ back when it was captured by the Australians of 3 Sqn RAAF in North Africa…
