Wolf's Picture of the Day - 19 June 2005

Here’s a bird with which many of you are undoubtedly familiar.

I think I’ve posted this before, a long time back, but I just got my grubby hands on the latest build of Photoshop as well as some plug-ins and wanted to try 'em out with some of my favorite images.

EDIT: Man, the forum auto-resize makes it look pretty-sh*tty. She looks much better full-size… at least I think so…

Beautiful pic. Thanks for posting.

That’s a nice photo-is it modern? Didn’t think any ME-109s were flight worthy-yet!

Dan

Great looking photo, thanks for posting.

That’s a fake-o right?

There are a couple of 109’s airworthy and one or two more close to it. A 109 in England that looked like this one was airworthy until an accident a year or two ago did some serious damage. The assessment shortly after the accident was that it could be rebuilt to static condition, but probably not flying condition. The Champlain Museum in Arizona had a Dora that was complete, but needed some work to make it airworthy. It was sold to the Museum of Flight in Seattle along the rest of the planes from that museum and I don’t know if they were going to make it airworthy or not. Most of their stuff is complete, but static only.

Oooops, now that I think of it a little bit, I believe the 109 in England with this same paint job was an E model, so this probably isn’t the same plane.

No, you pretty much had it right Darwin. This is ‘Black 6’, a Bf 109G-2/Trop that was in flying condition until an accident back in 1997, photos of which you can see HERE. The accident photos are at the bottom of the page.

It wasn’t so much a question of whether or not the aircraft could have been restored again to airworthy condition, but rather whether or not it should be flown again. Messerschmitt 109s aren’t as plentiful as Mustangs. It’s a bit more complicated than that, as there were other considerations, but that’s the basic gist.

Speaking of airworthy 109s, Here’s a few others that have flown over the last ten years or so…

‘White 14’ is currently hangared only about 30-45 minutes away from my house. Yippee!!

Here’s another Emil that’s recently been restored to airworthy condition in England, dunno if it’s flown yet, though…

No, it’s not fake in any way. I use Photoshop for a number of tasks, including routine image cleanup. The image of ‘Black 6’ was a bit yuck-o and needed a bit of cleanup and enhancement.

In case anyone is interested, here’s ‘Black 6’ back when it was captured by the Australians of 3 Sqn RAAF in North Africa…
