Wolf's Picture of the Day - 19 April 2005

Back to real airplanes… [;)]

This here is a ratty image of a ‘dirty great Heinkel’ and a few of the crew messing around. This came from ebay, hence the pretty crappy quality of the image. But it’s a fine photo…

I guess they were people too, just like our fellas. Only some of their people were bad… very, very, bad…

Fade to Black…

Yes, Hitler and some of his top minions, the folks that instituted the “camps” and ran them, many of the SS and so forth were very bad people. In contrast to that, I have the utmost respect and admiration for the average German military person. I am speaking of the Luftwaffe aircrews and ground support people, the infantry guy with a rifle freezing his butt off in a Russian foxhole, the tank crewman at Kursk, the U-boat crews, etc, etc. They were patriotic people doing a very unpleasant job for their country. They are just as deserving of respect and admiration for their accomplishments as any of the allied soldiers, sailors and airmen. I don’t mean this as any kind of political statement or support of Nazi principles, just support for the run-of-the-mill soldier.

Darwin, O.F. [alien]

That’s exactly how I feel. If only more folks could differentiate between the Nazi and the German. They weren’t all Nazis, folks, and they weren’t all evil SOBs. Most of them were just doing their duty and pretty much all were lied to about exactly why they were doing their duty…

Fade to Black…

[#ditto] It’s a shame that some of the bravery and genius displayed by some of these folks couldn’t have been pointed toward a more noble cause.

Ditto all the above, met a few when i was stationed in Germany, just soldiers doing thier duty

Nice pic. I’ll pass on the political commentary.

Regards, Rick

I won’t, hopefully these “jolly” fellows got thier dues from the guns of the RAF.

Just in case you folks can’t get enough of these jolly fellows, here’s some more…
