Here’s the 1/32 Wingnut Wings Sopwith Pup I built for wing_nut’s excellent WWI GB.
This thing took me way out of my comfort zone in several respects, but the kit was fantastic and the build one of the more educational I’ve experienced.
I’m not excited about the way the paintjob came out on this one (hard to tell from the pics, but it’s dreaded Tamiya-dusty), and knowing what I know now, I’d have been prepping for the rigging from step 1. Guess both of those will make my next Pup go together far better.
Amazingly, the rigging (Uni-mono .004" fly-tying mono, 0.5mm Albion Alloy silver nickel tubing, X-Sm Ultra Wire eyebolts) was pretty much foolproof. Tedious and a nightmare of dexterity, but foolproof.
For anybody who’s on the fence…I HIGHLY recommend Wingnut Wings’ stuff. Amazing detail, best decals I’ve ever encountered, fantastic instructions…fit has a few issues but is phenomenal where it matters (i.e. struts).
Doogs, it’s tough to believe that this is your first bipe judging from those pics. Looks like you’ve been at these for quite a while. The 'pit is superb, the weathering is spot-on, and the rigging, which usually makes or breaks these builds, looks flawless. Fantastic work! [Y]
Thanks man! Your definitely one of the ones I credit with getting me to give this a go in the first place, so that means a ton!
I know it’s a few builds away, but I’m already looking forward to the next Pup. Got my decals from Pheon Models last week, and they look a match for Wingnut. They’re also hands down the best packaged aftermarket decals I’ve ever beheld. The decals themselves look amazing, but included with them are color profiles printed on A4 card stock. Not paper, card stock. As well as detailed looks at some bits that will have to be scratchbuilt, and a booklet that goes in depth on each marking option, explaining the research, rationale, optional painting approaches, etc.
Yeah…when I get to it…the Night Trainer’s going to be one epic build! Can’t see it from the profile, but it’s got stars all over the upper wing surfaces, too!
