WIP - 1/48 scale T-34/76 with full interior - lots of pics

Here are some WIP pics:

I realize that the interior is over-weathered, but I’m fairly happy with it. Comments and critique are welcome.

It looks pretty good. im new to modeling, so i dont know very much about it but i think what u have so far is good. Yes you over weathered it, but it could of been hit by a tank, abandand, abducted by aliens, or anything else.

Goin’ good. That’s a big engine for a small tank

Well, I love the engine work so far. Excellent detail for 1/48. Is that Mr. Surfacer you added to the turret? Is this Tamiya or Bandai?

Thanks Tigerman! This is the first engine I’ve ever done, and I’m pretty happy with it. The kit is actualy from Hobbyboss. I agree, the kit is very well detailed (at the cost of TONS of ejector pin marks [yuck]), and seems to be a scaled down version of Trumpeter’s 1/16 scale version. The stuff on the turret is white out. I just apply it with the supplied sponge applicator, wait for it to skin over, then pat it with a paper towel. The top layer lifts and leaves a nice cast texture.

Kranky, Thanks for your input. You are correct, there are a lot of things that could have happened to the tank, although alien abduction seems unlikely[alien][(-D]

Somenewguy, Thanks! Believe me, the engine doesn’t seem that big when you’re trying to put it together!

that looks real nice! i like the white out trick, thats pretty inovative and as far as i can tell looks like some good 1/48 texture, ill hafta keep that in mind. the weathering doesnt look… overdone as much as i feel its just too “brushed on” if that makes sense? maybe… if you think something off and want to try something, spot paint little oil drips and more thought out paint chips and rust/streaking as opposed to the wash look… i mean i dunno ive never worked that small and i cant really tell tooo much detail in the photographs, if what im saying is way off base i appologize- and as far as im concerned, its the interior, your looking through hatches and screens- the fact that its there is great

nice job on the interior–it does NOT seem overly weathered to me – the interior of these tanks was exposed to all ellements (rain, snow, dirt ect)-- texturining you are doing looks very cool-- nice job so far dude------- tread[8D]

Nice detail. I know anything less that 1/35, I’m going blind. 1/48 is on the edge, but you did some nice work.

I don’t think it’s overweathered. The engine looks like it has seen some miles and the interior looks used based on that period. I think all in all very nice presentation.

Love the idea for the whiteout. I though since typewriters have gone the way of the dodo bird so did white out. Great idea.

Rounds Complete!!

I’ve used whiteout as a seam filler when I chopped the top on a pickup. The stuff dries fast, sands well and I used auto primer over it with no problems. The top coat of laquer went on and there was no ghosting. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone use it to texture a surface, and I believe I just may try that! Good job so far, don’t “see” how you guys do it in the smaller scales.

Great job so far. I’ve been curious about the quality of the Hobbyboss kits, this looks pretty good. Other than te ejector pin marks, have you noticed any other problem with the kit?[C):-)]

psstoff995: I think I get what you mean by brushed on. As for oil dripping, I’ll probably add some. The interior isn’t finished yet, I still have some parts to add. Maybe it’s the bad pics but there is plenty of chipping, it’s just a bit smaller than usual because I have to think of it 48 times bigger. I won’t add any rust streaking, as they only appear after sitting through a lot of rain and it doesn’t rain inside the tank.

Treadwell: Thanks for your comments on the weathering and cast texture. By over weathered I meant that there is a too much weathering where it shouldn’t be. I also think I went over -board with the chipping. I too am pleasently surprised with the way the cast texturing turned out.

Redleg12: Thank you![:)] Maybe the over weathering is just me (not that it’s anything near perfect). Thanks for the comment on the engine. I learned a lot about using artist oils working on it. As for white out, it’s easy to find. I got mine from walmart, and any office supplies store will definately have it.

Agentg: I also use white out as a filler and agree that it works and takes paint well. I found the texturing easy to do, and easy to remove if you mess up. It took me less than five minutes.

NucMedTec: Thank you for your compliment![:)] Aside from the ejector pin marks, the kit is actually very nice. Lots of tiny, delicate pieces to worry about though. And the turret lacts the cast texture. I’ve heard that the tracks have fit problems, but cannot confirm that yet. The kit provides markings for several vehicalss, but the instructions only cover one set.

Here are some size comparison pics to my brother’s 1/35 scale kit:

haha yeah very true about rain inside the tank. yeah im looking closer and i really like the chipping youve done on the front seats and the floor, the dirt/dust under the turret looks like a nice buildup on the floor. i think the fighting compartment looks good, the only thing i think i noticed was in the engine compartment, i dont know… something just… made it feel like plastic or resin as opposed to metal and i dont know how to explain it… other than its a model haha but no, this really looks great, and i forget its 1/48 and i picture 1/35 in my mind, so especally with those comparison shots, your inside looks great. i cant wait to see the outside haha maybe you can streak the rust there
