WIP - 1/16 scale T-34/85 - Update April 16

Here is my appreciation of the Trumpeter 1/16 scale T-34/85 model 1944 Factory no. 174

What is the first word that comes into your mind when you open the box? Huge. What comes secondly? Quality of molding. Even the numbers on the sprues are crisp. I can see no flash and only a very few ejector pin marks that will not be difficult to deal with.

The box claims:
-Total plastic parts: 845
-Metal parts: Brass wire for the tow cable and springs for the suspension.
-Photo etched parts: 2 frets (mainly ammo magazine and grills)
-Total sprues: 28 sprues plus lower hull, upper hull, lower turret, upper turret, 78 toothed track links, 78 flat track links, 20 rubber trims, one clear headlight.

Everything is very well packed like we use to see in Trumpeter’s boxes lately.

The turret is individually packed in a nice cardboard box.

There is also a separate box for the rubber trims and indy tracks.

The two hull halves are in a separate box also along with the decals, two PE frets, a bag of copper wire for the tow cable and springs for the suspension. (Yes workable suspension) also a sprue of poly caps and a clear lens for the headlight.

The road wheels also comes in a separate box.

The rest of the parts are on the sprues in individual plastic bags. I will not show you the complete sprues cause they are too big and I would have to zoom out so all the details would be loss. Instead, I’ll show you some of the finest details but first, just so you can have an idea of the scale of that beast, here is a shot of my 1/35 M36 Jackson next to the turret.

And here is how it looks next to the two hull halves.

As you can see on these two images, the surface texture and the weldings are quite nice.

The individual tracks are workable and nicely done. There are some pin marks on the inside of the tracks but they are quite subtil.

The texture is present on most of the parts and looks very realistic in my opinion. Here is a close-up of the turret ring where you can see the texture but also the fine details of the gear.

The radio components are nicely molded and for those who wants to build this kit out of the box, the wires are there on most of the electrical equipments and are more than acceptable even for a kit of that scale.

The machine guns are nice too but could have been better defined for that scale.

The gun breech is beautifull but as you can see in this picture, mine was damaged. This is the only damage I noticed in my kit tough.

Here you can see the driver’s hatch, note that the hinges are workable. What you see on the hatch is the normal texture, these are not pinholes.

Here are some pictures of other parts where you can appreciate the quality of molding and level of details.

Finally, you can have a good idea of what to expect from the kit by looking at the instructions. These are really clear and easy to follow.

The painting markings guide is the now classic colored drawings from Trumpeter. Nicely done.

This kit is in my opinion one of the best investment you can make into a model. Compared to what Tamiya offers at that scale, this kit is as nicely done but at a very lower price. I’m about ready to start that project as I have a very good reference CD from “Toadsman’s Pictures” and I’m about to receive the “T-34 Mythical Weapon” book from AirConnection.

In the next weeks, I’ll try to build and super detail that T-34 the best I can. And I will post picture of my progress. I know Terry and Treadwell also have a similar kit and it will be a challenge for me to come up with something to their standard.

More to follow …

Jeeeeeeeeeeesuusssss! I’m lost for words! Sorry I cannot comment, you’ve jus’ blown me away!![:O]

Yann, are you saying that you will only build 1 huge tank for 2007 ? [(-D]

Ben

You gotta have one of these Eddie. I’m sure you would turn it into a masterpiece.

You’re probably right![:D] But it will be ONE awesome build.

Isn’t that some kit! I have both the 1944 and 1942 versions in my waiting-to-be-built stash. Trumpeter really got it right when they came out with their 1/16 T-34 series. Here’s hoping their 1/16 half track (reportedly available next fall) is as good!

Oh yeah! I hear you! Can’t wait to see it. I just love big scale.

You’re going to have a lot of fun with it. I built one of their 1942 models way back a couple of years and it was a very very enjoyable process. The larger scale makes the detailing work easier and the only issue is what to do with the finished monster when you’re done! [:D]

Allright man! I know you’ve been talking about this one a while, glad to see you finally crack it open. I’ll be watching the thread with much interest.

congrats Yann !![:D]-- I hope you enjoy the journey --you will learn alot building this kit( about the tank)-- i anxiously await your ‘take’ on building this kit and look forward to posts as you build-- your gonna love ‘t-34 mythical weapon’ it is an awsome book – I just got mine a couple of weeks ago— keep us posted dude!![:D]— tread[:P]

[B)] Oh no!

That means you’re going to be all involved with this kit [sigh] when the 1/16 Tiger II comes out. That’s the one I’m waiting for…

Steve

I wouldn’t expect less than that from you… Russian Armor freak![swg]

No no no! Don’t worry! Both the King Tiger and the US Halftrack will end up in my stash whenever they comes out.

Yann – the gun breech looks correct to me except for the small broken off stud- if that is what you are talking about— no biggy — easy fix[:D]-- tread[:P]

i have been toying with the idea of getting one of these after following tread and terry’s builds and now Yann has to go and do this [:)] the kit looks fantastic and i had no idea of the size till now, its huge. im really looking forward to see another one of these goin, i’de like to see steve get a KT in this scale goin as well then get eddie on a m2 halftrack also in this scale and were gonna need a bigger forum[:D]

The tank factory in your basement would not be as productive as it is now Ron.[:D]

It would be really cool to see what you can do with such a beast Ron.

Ha Ha! I don’t know about the forum but I definitely need a bigger workbench! I use to spread the sprues all over the place when I model. For that one, I’ll have to hang them on the wall I think.

good luck on the build, if tread or i can be of any help just hollar, but with an 85 treads the better bet for expertise.

Terry.

Wow can’t wait to see this one started. By the way, not to direct the attention elsewhere, but after reading Biffa’s reply about him thinking about getting one, it made me dream about how something by “The Weathering King” would look in large scale!

Exactly … come on Ron … you can do it.

Ok, here are some pictures of my progress on that HUGE 1/16 T-34/85.

First, I had to replace the molded on wiring by something more convincing.

Also, the escape hatch had the retaining brackets molded on in the open position. I don’t understand that one. Anyway, I had to scrape them off and reposition them in a locked position.

The back of the seats are missing and I scratchbuilt ones from styrene sheet.

Here are some other molded on details that I replaced.

Now, this is just a dryfit assembly to have a feel of the rear inner details.

And here is the motor.

I plan to open the door on the bulkhead partition wall so we can see the motor through it. So I’ll have to cut the door off and scratchbuild another one.

I also plan to show the tank with its rear panel open.
But it will require some work cause I’ll have to rebuild the inner flat bars that is usually used to bolt the rear panel onto. I’ll also have to scrape the bolt heads off and drill holes in place. The hinges will be workable.

So here is where I am right now. I’m ready to get some of the interior painted but I’m not sure of what color to use. Any suggestion welcome, I use Tamiya acrylics.

Thanks for looking and any comments are welcome.
