Winter boots

I’m currently painting a Dragon GI figure in winter outfit and I noticed that the boots are not the regular laced up boots but something kmore like rubber. What are they called and what color should it be?

Not sure what set of figures you are using, but they might be called “shoepacs” Its rubber like on the bottom and water resistannt material on the top. The bottom should be black, and the top a dark olive drab or almost brown. The boots might also be “galoshes” which are all black. Hope this helps. Lenny

Galoshes, AKA overshoes, a clip front rubber boot worn over the standard
GI shoe, combat boot or jump boots

Shoe Pacs- Rubber sole and insulated lowers with a waterproofed lace up leather upper, worn in place of shoes, combat boots, or jump boots.

They’re galoshes alright. Thanks for the info and the photos. Much appreciated.

which era are you talking about WWII Korea or later Cold war era (1970’s-1990’s)? because if you have a figure with the N2B Artic gear the boots would be the “Mickey Mouse”(don’t ask me why as I’m still confused over that name) cold weather boots and those boots were made in all black and all white rubber material.

Dragon does not make any sets of Cold War or post Cold War GIs with cold weather boots. The closest would be the Chosin Marines in Shoe Pacs. The black boots are called Mickey Mouse boots because they look like the big footwear he wears. The white ones are called Bunny Boots.

I cannot recall the name of the kit box. It is Dragon and I think it is part of the Ardennes series. WWII alright.

Though with slight modification the German figure sets in winter gear could be made into passable Cold War soldiers with the N2B Artic weather gear.

Probably this 101st Airborne Bastogne set? While Dragon gives just about every iteration of German units in the Ardennes, the same is not true for the US side.

Mikeym, isn’t the N2B the Air Foce Cold Weather gear? For ground pounders the stuff used in Korea was pretty close to what we had thru most of the Cold War until the GoreTex stuff came out in the mid/late 80s. Fishtail parka and Field Pants w/liners. Pile caps changed. Shoe Pacs were replaced by Mickey Mouse or Bunny boots depending on conditions, and of course the web gear changed from WWII/Korea “X” harness to Vietnam “H” harness (M1965 IIRC) to finally the Nylon ALICE gear.

I seem to recall the Navy and coast guard had the Navy Blue version of the N2B. But my dad managed to keep his N2B set minus the Mickey Mouse Boots and artic gloves when he retired in 93. I think the army ground troops didn’t have the N2B but the Aviation regiments probably had them.

BTW the Mickey mouse boots and Bunny boots were the same boots just different colors. I would have thought they would have issued the white boots with the troops in the artic camo schemes and the black ones to the troops serving base duty?
