Windows 10 "100% disk usage" problem

My Wndows 10 PC is experiencing a common problem, “100% disk usage”. The hard drive is operating at 100% usage (not capacity) which makes the PC run dirt slow. Does anyone have a soultion for this?

Windows search and indexing can be very disk intensive. Try this first - disable windows search and see if it fixes the issue - fixed mine.

Look here and step through ‘Way 3’

You can try looking in task manager to see what is accessing your disk so much. Just hit ctrl+alt+del and click on “task manager” on the menu that comes up. You can then scroll through the list of applications and processes to see what’s responsible for accessing the hard drive so much. Unfortunately, this sort of thing is usually caused by a virus on your machine, but task manager would be a good, first troubleshooting step.

JohnnyK, what is your system specs?

Intel Core i-3-6100 CPU

8 GB RAM

900GB Disc, 554 GB free

2944MB Virtual Memory

and never look back.

disastermaster, explain that to a friend of mine who has a mac & has troubles with it.

My wife has an older HP all-in-one and it was having a similar problem. Turned out it was downloading rather large updates. Can you leave the machine on overnight, don’t let it go to sleep. Could me the same issue.

Yes, it’s a hard drive. HP computer.

Well, I also have a MacBook. For some reason I cannot login to the FSM forum on the MacBook.

I’ll give that a try. Thanks.

Never used a Mac laptop…

Always a desktop, for over 20 years now. FSM comes in great.

I guess it’s all in the way you hold your mouse …

…or maybe I’m just lucky.

I put in a larger hard drive last year. I’ve got over 20 years of info.
(thanks to having a separate backup hard drive and updating each month)

This old imac is a 2012 model running the latest ƒirefox browser.

JohnnyK, hp computer can also be a laptop besides a desktop. could install a ssd as your windows drive & use the hard drive for your data as the ssd is about 10 times faster then the hard drive. i’ve done that with both of my towers with a 128gig ssd for windows & a 1tb hard drive for data.

Was it the CPU or the memory? I had a similar thing happen to me today, fired up PC and after 60 seconds of idling the memory usage was maxed out. I traced it back to a web based media server program I use to stream movies from my hard drive to my TV. I disabled the program from start up, restarted, and it is fixed.

Sorry for the slow response to your question. I do not get e-mail notifications.

Mo hard drive runs at 100% usage.
