I am new to AB`s and just seen a vid on cleaning etc.The guy said he uses Windex /glass cleaner to clean the AB has it is cheaper than the specified cleaners. In different countries products have different names or not availsble. What does windex contain?
Windex with Ammonia is the cleaner referred to. It’s only good for acrylics, not enamels. Windex is primarily Isopropyl Alcohol with approximately 3% Ammonia.
Windex (or any window cleaner containing ammonia) will work for cleaning your airbrush when using most modelling acrylic paints. However it’s not effective (nor recommended) for cleaning when painting with enamels.
Is Isopropyl , nail varnish remover or methalated spirit also?
Isopropyl is a suitable alternative thinner for many (notably Tamiya and Gunze) acrylic paints, but it will turn some ( eg. Vallejo) into sticky goo. It can be used to clean your airbrush when using compatible acrylic paints.
Nail varnish remover is acetone (or acetone substitute) based and should clean most acrylics from your airbrush. Not recommended as a thinner though.
Methylated spirits is ethyl alcohol and can be used in the same manner as Isopropyl, but is a little more volatile and evaporates more quickly. I use it both as a thinner and a cleaning medium (I use primarily Tamiya and Gunze acrylics).
Sometimes a picture can answer a question better.
