Ive used Testors MM laquer dull coat all the time on acrylics and enamels with no issues what so ever. But if your talking about the automotive kind that you buy in the stores i wouldnt use that.
Lacquer paint is known as “hot” paint and could cause problems when you put it over acrylic or enamel but it could also work perfectly. If you are unsure, then testing it on a scrap piece is your best bet.
Thanks very much for the replies. I think I’ll test what I want to do on a 2nd rate model before I try it on something I want as a showpiece. In any case I think several light coats of lacquer instead of one or two heavy coats is the way to go.

Ok, I’m not saying it WILL happen, but here’s an example of what CAN happen if it goes wrong

Start by insuring that the acrylic base has dried (cured that is). 24 hrs is a minimum time but 48 is much better. then apply several light coats of laquer rather than one or two thick coats.
I read your description of what happened. Bummer. Here are my thoughts. Your acrylic was already sealed with at least two layers of Glosscote before you hit it with Dullcoate so the Dullcote interacted with the Glosscote more than the original paint. Further, you used a can which seriously reduces your ability to control the application. The can also prevents you from seeing how well the product is mixed.
If you go up into the figures section, and look for the threads I’ve posted, all those figs are painted primarily in accryilics and sealed with a healthy dose of Dullcote fired from an airbrush.
That one wasn’t mine… [(-D] I just remembered seeing the original post long ago and threw it up here as an example of what might happen. [:)]
Just today I sprayed Testor Model Master Enamel Glosscoat over a basecoat of Tamiya flat Acrylic which had dried about 20 hours…perfect no problems whatsoever.
I’ve used lacquer dull coats over acrylics and anamels for years with no problems . just dont spray on a wet coat , instead use light dry coats .
