Why the big stash size?

He/She who dies with the most kits is dead…when’s the estate sale?[:p]

Kit hording is not much different from people that go over the top on other things. This includes pets (see you do have something in common with the crazy lady down the street with 100 cats) or birds, books, food, etc. THere was an article in psychology today about hording. Made me think.

We figured it out a while back and I think one of the guys would have had to build 1 kit a day 7 days a week, for 8 years based on what he had stashed in his cellar. (And I feal guilty about taking a week or less to build something like a 1/35 kettenrad)

I look at the economics, if I kit I really want is on sale, then I try my best to get it right then. Or, if it’s a kit that I’ve been looking for a while, then I get it right then, because you never know when you’ll find it again. Right now I have about 20 kits that I’ve gathered up, it’s just that I didn’t bring any with me on this current excursion ( A mistake that I will not repeat the next time I deploy!) Once I get stateside again, I’m diving right into my stash, just because I can.

This is pretty interesting , kit hoarding huh ? I wouldn’t talk to loud about that , the liberals would likely put a tax on it . I just got back into this hobby myself and within a year I have aquired over 100 kits or more . I buy something I like when I can , or when on sale like the sales at Hobby Lobby , one of my fav sale times , and they just seem to grow . I never really thought about it as hoarding just stocking up for those rainy days or reitirement [:D]

Must admit this is something that I am trying to avoid.

I know what I’m like. I loose interest very quickly, especially if something new and shiny comes along!!!

Therefore I only buy new, as I finish kits.

DITO… I like buying them and having them around for a rainy decade…[:D] I have a hundred or so. 98% are DML and Tamiya armor. I’ll be sitting around usually when I am supposed to be working and come up with a diorama idea so I run out and buy what i need for it and then shelve the idea until I get time… Ya’ll know how it is…

Got a little over 200 stashed away. Of course it’s a waste of money - that’s why it’s called a hobby. Can’t wait for the day I can add another 0 to that total. [:D]

Wife: “Why do you have a closet full of models?”
My reply:" Why do you have a closet full of shoes?"

I really had no intention of developing a stash, but now I have about 15.
For me it comes from the evil genius of online marketing…I usually find my order about $10-20 away from free shipping or a promotional coupon for cash off, that to spend the extra on that Panther or Stug actually saves money or only adds a little to the bottom line.
Next thing you know I have a pile. Man, what a sucker I am.[;)]

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA [:D] Thats [censored] priceless… Best answer so far…

Lol! I love that one about a closet full of shoes also! Can’t use it on my wife though, she only has three pair!

I only have bout 150 or so stashed, and I’m working through them fairly rapidly. Compared to the 900+ I have built, I think I’m doing pretty good!

I do buy when I see a kit I have been waiting/looking for, because I want to get it before they stop production on it. I feel if I don’t, I’ll never get it when it goes out of production. That has already happened to me at least three times.

I admit, I hoard. Makes me feel good, having a large selection. Rainy day, out of prodution ect… But the funny thing is if it’s out of production I will probably never build it, just too rare, like the Revell 1/96 Saturm V, cost huge money, had the plan to build the tower. But then had second thoughts. Who cares, I love to just look as I build[:D]

I generally pick up a model that I really like. I’m always afraid that it’s something that I won’t be able to find later, so I gotta get it while I can. Also, I tend to not pass up a good deal.
One word of warning, don’t go e-bay, it’s too addictive.

Partly with me it’s fear. Extrapolating from present trends, in 10 years the only store left will be China-Mart, and it will only stock prebuilt die-cast and snap-together kits. It’s already happened at the LHS - they must have about half the number of glue kits that they used to have. I am sure this is an unrealistically pessamistic view. Still, the worst that can happen is that I leave a few kits to my kids - who will hopefully follow me in the hobby. The quality of glue kits and detail sets is superb today, and I know I will keep building from now until the day they bury me with an Enzo Ferrari kit under one arm, a P-51 kit under the other, and an M1A1 to prop up my head. I want to stock up while the quality is high.

Finally, like zokissima and others have said, I also like a good deal. My trouble with ebay is that a good deal frequently becomes average after shipping is added. I find that my negotiated cash price with the vendors at IPMS “modelfests” is generally as good as ebay + shipping, unless I am looking for something very particular. I got a couple of good deals at the Dallas Scalefest last weekend, then finished up at the Squadron open house. Talk about stash inflation!

I’ve been thinking about the Ebay route as well. Are the deals good? Are the kits in good shape and complete?

When I’m gone I’m taking 'em all with me as well, only I’m having them sent ahead so I can get back to work right away…

Anyhoo, for me, the stash is huge because I buy kits and other modeling stuff for several reasons.

Many of the kits I have I intend, or would like, to build. I used to collect for the sake of collecting, but it got pretty ridiculous. So now I buy only things which I want to build or things which I can resell. And the reselling usually involves buying entire collections.

Whenever I grab a collection, I keep what I really want and sell the rest. That’s part of how I fund the habit.

And I buy as cheap as possible whenever I can. Much of my personal collection I acquired from a pal of mine who used to switch modeling interests with the frequency of a cheap HAM radio. Whenever he decided to dump the collection, if he was in the right mood, you could throw a number at him and he’d jump at it without really thinking it over or even making a counter-offer.

Many’s the time I bought this guy’s collection for pennies on the dollar, with the best deal seeing me pay 25¢ a kit. He doesn’t make the switches too often anymore so I’m SOL on that front! [V][;)]

As I said, I don’t really collect anymore; with a few exceptions. I collect anything Curtiss-Wright and will jump on almost any P-40 kit I come across. Also, even though I couldn’t possibly build all the aircraft represented on them, I have a weakness for decals. I’ve never counted them, but I’m sure I could supply a few distributors! [:p]

Also, sadly, I tripled my overall stash when my Dad passed away. At the time I had around 450 kits to which were added his remaining collection of around 1200. I’m glad he had sold off most of his stuff over the past ten years cuz, being the sentimental guy that I am, I dunno what I would have done with over 4000 models. Only recently have I begun to part with some of the more dear items in his collection.

And if ya’ll think that 4000, 1200 or even a few hundred kits is insane, I could tell you about another pal of mine who had over 30,000 when he passed on. But I’m gonna save that for the book… [:p]

Fade to Black…

30, 000?!?..
do tell…

It’s a weird one…I know an employee at a model shop who has a personal stash (I’ve been told) of about 2000 kits…why? I’m just not sure.
I’ve got about 70 - and I but them only slightly faster than I build them, and I don’t build them very quickly…

when i still had a part-time job, i bought about a kit a week
i build in small scale, so that cost me $10 - 15 (US) per week…
not 2 bad, really…
i build about 1 per month, so they did pile up a litlle.
i plan on building everything eventually, some items need research
& references before i start construction, others r just waiting 4 the rite moment
(like the start of a group build, 4 example)

but now i don’t have that job anymore [:(]
so i’m glad i have a stash …
i just have 2 dig up the cash 4 my scratchbuilding supplies
but that’s usually just a couple of bux here & there.
if i hadn’t laid in a few kits, i’d b going thru serious modeling withdrawal
rite now ! [:D]

frosty[:)]

Born optimist.

Like the kit, want to build it, should have the time one day!!!

Less than 100 kits now unbuilt.

I had a small stash, mostly due to Hobby Lobby 1/2 price sales. The reasoning was that I could jump int a GB if I wanted or, if I was working on a particularly complex build (Panther anyone?! [:D]) I could grab one and build OOB just to maintain sanity.
Then I got laid off. No $ for new kits so the stash took the hit. Thank God I’m back to work.
