I was browsing another topic in this section (Pics of Work Benches) and saw that many had ginormous stacks of unopened models. I can understand a dozen or two, but several hundred? Why not just buy the models you feel like working on at the time you’ll actually work on them? Also, is anyone worried about a fire breaking out and destroying that stash (or is that just me [:)] )?
It’s not meant as criticism, I’m just trying to build a case for it when I have to justify it to my wife.
I have about 150 unbuilt WWII armor and vehicle kits. My goal before retiring was to have at least 1 kit of every important tank, vehicle, or gun involved in WWII regardless of country. Why? A couple of reasons really.
First and foremost, I can only afford maybe one kit every two months on my retired pay, but I always have my “stash” to fall back on. Second, about 15% of the kits I own have either been out of production for years and will probably not be reissued or are limited run kits that will definitely not be reproduced.
Plus, a huge stash pile is just plain neat to look at, don’t you think?
Having a large stash, for me is not a problem, but in all fairness to answer the question regarding a fire, my neighbours fear this happening, it’s not just the plastic kits, there’s the paints, thinner’s and other asorted stuff. If my place caught fire, it’d most likely take out both neighbours at the same time. I have all of my model and materials insured against that sort of thing, in return I have to display a HAZCHEM class 3 sign on my front door.
I used to do the model show vendor thing. When I quit I still had about 5000 kits but I have disposed of over half of that. Mostly all that is left are my personal kits to build (about 200) and my old kit collection. If you are or know a collector then you understand the affliction. I’m very luck because my wife knows how many kits I have and continue to buy but she is supportive my hobby.
I have a large stash (so much that I actually have a database to keep track). I never intended to do it; it just sorta happened. They accumulated over the years from going to hobby shops, swap meets and eBay. “Oooh! THAT looks cool!” is probably the most dangerous phrase I have (At least for my wallet.)
I have about 15-20 in my stash. My biggest problem is that I enjoy buying new models almost as much as building them. Of course, building them takes weeks, if not months, whereas buying them only takes a few minutes. Plus I like to buy something if I find it onsale, or I find some rare kit that I’ve been looking for. It’s really amazing how quickly the stash grows. If you’re newer to the hobby, you’ll realize that. And by the way, welcome to the boards, Natm!
I have to use a data base to keep track of mine also but I have them for reference as well as to build. In maintaining a modeling website I need to be able to choose from a large selection to continually add new reviews and builds - that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
I never thought about a fire destroying my collection untill now. Thanks alot! As if that gang of model thieves didn’t have me worried enough now I gotta think about fires.
I wish I had a big stash and a workbench. I wish I had a closet set up for modeling. I drool over stuff like that when I open up FSM. I now have a total of 6 models. 5 are built.
Hiram – I’d glady trade my stash for five finished models. I’m infamous for starting them and not finishing them. I got back into this hobby a year ago, but I’ve only got one finished model to show for it. I’ve been working on the same Revell-Monogram P-51 for two months now.
Yah, that describes me. Thanks to all the interest that these forums develop, you tend to get caught up in the everyones excitement when describing a kit. I never had a"stash" until last year. I’ve been buying kits that I know that I’ll want to build someday, whenever I see a good price. Figure I’ll save money buying now rather than later.
Hiram, whatever you do don’t develop ‘stash-envy’. You can only build so many at a time and a lot of these collections have no doubt been put together over years and years.
The main thing is to get enjoyment out of what you are doing irrespective of where you do it or how many kits you have in your stash!
I don’t really have the budget to be able to stock up on kits. Also I am just 18 months into the hobby. The most number of unbuilt kit at any time would probably be 3. In a span of 18 months, I was able to buy about 40 kits 37 of which I have already built.
