This is a question I have wondered about since a teen. Many countries have our form of Baseball. So we never play teams outside The United States. So if that’s the Case How can it be the WORLD Series? That’s like the heavyweight Championship of the World. Since most of the Pugilism matches( Boxing ) take place between Americans . Same question. Can You give me a satisfactory answer?
Are there not any Canadian teams in Major League Baseball? While it is not truly international like the Olympics, MLB does have at least Toronto representing “the rest of the world”… lol!
It would be cool to incorporate playoffs with the Japanese teams as well for a true World Series.
Without dipping into politics I always thought baseball might be a way to be more inclusive with our Central American neighbors. Might even inspire Cuba to get it’s act together.
And there were also the Expos.
Yes for sure Japan would be a great addition.
Bish- not a good answer, but no other countries really have organized football (the kind with the pointy ball) leagues,
There are players from all over world in MLB, Dominican Republic, Japan… and we are the melting pot so the title fits in that regard. Not really a fan so no skin in this
As for boxing Bish is spot on. Lennox Lewis (Brit) was one of the greatest boxers ever. The Klitschko brothers (Ukrainian) we great as well. And mister low blow Andrew Golota (Russian) could have been a champ but for his affinity for junk punching.
and there’s Tyson Fury the 6’9" Brit.
That’s sort of different because of the limited scope of American Football. American colleges had the various bowl games for different conferences, like the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl. These were regional collegiate championship games and several of them have been played for over 100 years.
In the US, the National Football League and the American Football League existed together for a time with the NFL being the older league. About 50 some odd years ago, the two leagues decided to have a bowl game between the winner of the NFL and AFL.
This was called the Super Bowl after a handful of championship games were played. Previously it was called the AFL-NFL Championship game. When the AFL merged with the NFL in the 70s, each “league” became a conference; i.e. the NFL became the NFC and the AFL became the AFC. Both conferences became the newly merged “NFL.”
About twenty years ago, they realigned the league so that each conference consisted of 16 teams each. Each conference was divided equally into 4-team divisions; North, South, East and West for each the AFC and NFC.
There are still some odd alignments, like the Dallas Cowboys being in the NFC East but being one of the western most teams, and the Indianapolis Colts being in the AFC South yet being in the northern part of the country near the Great Lakes and Chigago.
Bill, you are wrong about no other countries not having an organized football league as we Canadians have the CFL which uses somewhat different rules compared to your NFL.
Wasn’t there a ream called the Washington Senators at one time? I know I’ve heard the name somewhere.
They were doing the world series long before other countries started playing baseball, back in the 40s I think.
Even though I odn’t get worked up about baseball or even show interest in it, I do have a couple items from my Father from 1943 I think it was.
His squadron was finally getting ready to deploy overseas when someone came up with the idea of having a game using some professional players against a military team. It was probably to sell bonds. My Father’s squadron was chosen and a team was picked. I don’t know how it ended but each player was given some B/W photos, a signed ball, and a bat. This bat is made of a red wood, stamped as a official bat, and has the names of all the professional players imprinted in it with a what might be a gold inlay of some kind to make the names stand out. Eventually I will be passing down the ball and bat to my osn who already has the photos.
Senators played in DC up until 1960 I think and moved to Minnesota. The World Series is much older than 1940’s. Early 1900’s for the World Series.
Anyone who enjoys baseball should visit the hall of fame in Cooperstown. Great little town with a Mayberry kind of feel. Great exhibits and a library with hand written stats from the early days. Of course, the hall of fame plaques too. Wonderful way to spend the day.
