In one of my insomnia induced late night t.v. marathons last night, I was watching a MASH* rerun on one of the local channels and noticed a slight, shall we say, anamoly: in Col. Blake’s office hanging from the ceiling is a model of a UH-1. It appears to be a 1-32 scale rendition of a long cabin bird, possibly a Revell offering of the UH1D or H. Any one else ever notice this?[%-)]
Hmmm… hadn’t noticed that one, but it isn’t at all surprising, considering Hollywood views a Helicopter as a Helicopter, period, regardless of era or type, the public isn’t suppose to know the difference.
There was a thread a while back concerning Hollywood characterizations, especially concerning aircraft. ie: “Battle of the Bulge”: Henry Fonda was riding in the back seat of an 0-1 Bird Dog… and “What Waits Below”: a UH-1D approaches, lands, then takes off, with the sound track of an OH-13!
Of course, there’s zillions of such examples out there, including M.A.S.H. apparently!
Thanks, I’ll look for that the next time I watch it.!
Take care,
Frank
Odd that you mention the TV version of MASH having some “Hollywood”
errors. Ever notice the 4077th unit plaque at “Rosie’s” ? There is the profile of a “Huey” on it. Since MASH had an anti-war theme I wonder if the “Huey” profile was some kind of reference to the Vietnam War. MASH was filmed during that era and it is quite plausable that the writers and producers wanted to pass some subtle ironies on to the shows viewers.
The plot thickens…
speaking of errors on tv, in the movie die another day:
they are going over a minefield in hover crafts, the chase ends, and bond is captured by guys in jeeps? there were mines!
and another time they are on a russian an-124(or 225, i’m not sure), any way russian plane, used by china, the warning anouchments are in english!
Snakedriver is right.
The series was filmed during the Vietnam war and was anti war, everybody knew it was’nt about korea. the huey is probably just a mistake, maybe they knew, maybe they did not, it dosent really matter…
Mistakes in movies will always happen.
I noticed it too, and when I bought the DVD set, I paused the picture to laugh about it! I didn’t notice the patch though. I’llhave to look through my sets to see if I can find it.
There was something on TV last week about “MASH” and it was mentioned more than once it was an “anti-Vietnam” show. I think the “Hueys” were intentional myself!
I was reading an action novel a couple of months ago, can’t remember the author.
There was a hovercraft chase (though the book said 'hovercraft’s) in Antarctica, the guy in the lead hovercraft at one point stamped on the brake pedal! in a hovercraft??? I don’t think so, or was it artistic licence? It certainly lost credibility from then on with me.

I must be stupid, I don’ know, I wasn’t around during Vietnam, I was born in 1976, I can never seam to understand how the show is an antiwar show and I can never see the Vietnam connection, I guess you have to have “Been There” so to speak.
I just never see it the way everyone else does. I don’t know why. SORRY.
It’s sort of “you had to have been there, done that” type of thing. Hell a lot of us that were “there” never “understood” some of the moronic decisions! In that respect it was just like “MASH”!
I got the show a little better I suppose 'cause I grew up with a Vietnam Vet in the house. I also think it was more “anti authority”, which I could definately relate too, after being in the military, but they were always there to do there jobs…it sounds more like everyday life to me!!! But Catch-22 (book more than the movie) was a great anti-war/government/authority book. Check it out sometime, it’s hillarious!!!
There was a special on TV about the movie MASH. The producers stated that it was about Vietnam, and that they placed it in the Korean era to placate the studio executives. If you’ve ever seen the movie poster for it, you’ll see the V (fingers) peace sign as the main theme. In the movie they are smoking dope, fer cryin out loud! The TV version of MASH just carried out the theme even farther. It was a funny show but as for the bleeding heart stuff went, I didn’t care for it. I am a Navy Vietnam vet by the way, and proud of it.
I never noticed any errors in mash. But in movies, WOW lots of them. I remember a James bond movie where he flies a Hercules and is chased by a fighter, the fighter destroys one engine on the Herc. and it stops with the sound of a reciprocating engine ( just in case you don’t know…the Hercules has turbine engines )
It ain’t just movies boys and girls…it’s documentarys as well on discovery and the history channel. It kind of takes away from the program. Ever notoce in the movies that the turbine on the helo’s starts winding down the RPMs BEFORE the helo even touches down…negative ghost rider…except maybe during an autorotation.
Would you expect anything less from Hollywood?
If anyone has seen “We Were Soldiers”, at the very end of the movie they show a Chinook coming in to drop off reporters. That Chinook is a “D” model - now we know, of course, that “D” models didn’t come out until the mid-80s.
Petty I know - but still fun to look for.
that was so that we could read them[:p]
…the pattern is full! [;)] Nice to know thy classics, isn’t it? Speaking of Top Gun: the inverted cockpit-to-cockpit finger-giving scene…[:0]. Ever wonder where the tailplanes would go if you fly that close together?[xx(]
Thank you all!
Now when my wife tells me “No one but you would notice that.” I can point out that, there are several of us who DO notice that stuff.
I especially love the modern ships in the back ground of Pearl Harbor. . .the director left them in on purpose!! He said they just looked cool.

Actually, those were old Spruance class destroyers waiting to be turned into Gillettes or BICs or Mach 3s. So they put some pyrotechnics on 'em… look at the front were the hull numbers should be… they’re painted over, but the wrong shade of haze gray. Also, imagine that… Spruances with Tomahawks during WWII? Don’t think it would have taken four years to finish! [:D]
Also, ever notice how almost EVERY helo on tv sounds either like a huey, or a Jet Ranger? Even on History Channel productions, they still get it wrong .
