I disagree about R/C kits as being Toys. I fly R/C airplanes during the Spring and Summer and some of the planes these guys at clubs are my house, are the spitting image of vintage aircraft. The only difference is the motors are the only thing not to scale.
I do not see how a man can get mangled by an R/C Tiger Tank unless it was full scale. How does being mesmerized lead into a police chase?
Tenchi I think you have again shoved your young foot in your mouth and swallowed it!!! Real RC Vehicles are not toys! RC Kits are also works of art and great engineering! If you dont like RC then fine…But dont bash something you dont know about. I have more sunk in RC cars/engines/electronics/hop-ups than most make in yearly car payments…Cost about $2900 to even start thinking about racing…The perception of RC vehicles as toys is exactly why most accidents happen…Dad goes and buys JR a box stock Mugen GTB(which will run 50 mph) outta the box and weighs about 4 pounds…Oh its just a toy…Yeah wait till JR nails dad or seriously injuries the dog with that toy…
If you still think there toys when I go to Tampa for a race in January your more than welcome to come on over stand in the parking lot and Ill drive my Serpent Impact toy into your foot…hmmmm 7 pounds with a top end of roughly 75 MPH depending on gearing…
I once gave last rites at a flying site to a man whose heli threw a rotor blade and the blade went THROUGH him and embedded itself in the wall of the building behind him. Fortunately he lived and recovered fully. These models require respect but are immensely fun to build and fly as is any device capable of harming someone, like a car.
R/C are NOT toys. First of all, there aren’t too many toys that can chop one’s head off like a heli blade.
Anyway, building and operating R/C all require great skills.
toys are generally something that anyone can enjoy without much background. But if you do that with a R/C “thing that can fly”, it’ll be garbage in less than 2 seconds.
I may have to retract my statement about R/C kits being toys just on the basis of what really is a toy. It is something we like, collect, build, and display or play with. When some of us build models, how many people go to put life into them and play with the positions and at the same time make sounds. I bet some of our wives could tell a few stories about the sound effects that go into models
It’s not really true, but it’s based on a true story. The main character, er psychotic killer, is based on a real life guy named Ed Gein. He was also the inspiration for the killer in Silence of the Lambs, and the killer in Psycho as well. He was, in fact, from Wisonsin.
If you want more info here’s a couple of links, but be warned, they are graphic. Hmm, on the second thought, just do a Google search, I don’t know that those links would be appropriate to post here.
Unfortunately, there are some very sick people out there, and sometimes they aren’t caught soon enough. It can be a sad world.
Several years ago there was a small boy killed at an RC flying day in England.
Apparently someone hadn’t surrendered their transmitter to the organisers (as is required - safety first) and switched it on while someone was flying their plane.
The flying plane went out of control (conflicting and interfering radio signals) and the plane plowed into the young boys chest.
Face it, guys. Sh*t happens. All the time. You gotta keep on the lookout for it.
Cheers

I have to say until I read these I would never have considered flying R/C helos a death-defying act. I guess you can find adrenaline junkies everywhere. [swg]
It couldn’t have been Grimsby, nothing interesting ever happened in Grimsby.
It’s like Britain’s answer to Cleveland.
Danger is a relative thing.
It is always sad when somene is injured or killed, especially when it is in pursuit of a hobby.
However, HRFs(Hobby Related Fatalaties) ( I just made that up) aren’t going to figure in your insurance companies calculations, not unless your hobby is shark fishing with a knife, or alligator wresting.
Neither of which have ever been practised in Grimsby, or Cleveland for that matter!
