I know it is a huge scale and very very pricey, but I’m looking for the kit of a Sopwith Camel that is a museum quality, stripped down model. I’m thinking it is maybe by Hasegawa, but I’m not sure.
The company that makes it also makes WW1 Fokkers (like a DVII) in the same scale. It has all the rigging and control cables exposed.
Stringer, I couldn’t help but answer. I happened to be a bit of a SOPWITH CAMEL Nut! 7 out of my total 70 unbuilt kits are OOP revell 1/28 Sopwith Camels that I ve been collecting everywhere I can. Iam addicted to that plane. I know EXACLTY the kit you are refering too. I konw because I’ve been searching for it for the last three years and I recently bought its sister ship in the series the Fokker Dr 1 recently reissued. I can only hope beyond hope that Hasegawa will do the same for this venerable kit. The series is 1/8th scale and in addtion to thses two the third was an SE5a. http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?HSGZX2 I have the model Expo 1/16 scale kits of the Alb Dva and Nieport 28, museum quality as well but the Fokker Dr1 is a kit like no other. the Camel was on the same level. When I first got to New York I saw one ONCE buried on the top shelf of a very old hobby store ran called JAN’s. She wanted $1000.00 bucks for it ! I laughed at the time and vowed there must be another way. Three years later Iam begining to reconsider weather she didn’t have something there. My only hope is that with the centinal of WWI in 10 more years these kits will finilly make a reissue.
Squadron has the Fokker DR1 listed at $500, but sadly no Camel. Hopefully they may reissue it someday, but at that price it must have very limited appeal.
Man, what a project that would be. The kit even came with tools for assembly. Thanks for the link.
I’ve also been a Camel nut ever since I built my first Revell 1/28 kit back in the 60’s. I have about three or four of them now (unbuilt) thanks to ebay. Back then I also built the Fokker Dr1, which I may also have now, but I can’t remember if I bought one and I’m away from home to check. They are great kits, and with the proper skills and detail kits available now, they could be even greater.

The drawings come rolled in a tube. I thought they would look great framed and hung on the wall behind a nice model like the Hasa one we’re speaking of. Of course, given the size of the model and the drawings, you would have to dedicate one end of a room (a shrine?) just to display it! It would make a great center piece for display cases of other models, though.
rjk - Yes, it would indeed have limited appeal. Perhaps that is why they stopped making them. It really never occurred to me about the centennial of WW1. That is something to look forward to, and who knows what advancements they may make in models by then!
Thanks for the link. Do you have any built? I am working on one of my Revell kits now attempting to apply as much as I can. Its coming out ok. Iam debating wheather to start on scratch building the ammo cans for the Copperstate Vickers guns. I made the intrument panel and move it forward a bit where it belongs closer to the vertical plane of the air intakes. I built a wood n wire frame for the cockpit side wall details. AND I cut holes in the bottom wing root over the top of the rear landing gear where the double flying wires really attach not where the pre formed rigging hols are that revell molded in. I looking forward to closing it up so that I can prime it and try out my new MIsterkit WWI Acrylic colors for it. I f that turns out nie who knows I might get to building the rest of them.
MG - No, I don’t have any built or even started yet. I’m in this German WW2 mode thing right now and have a couple of them to finish yet. My work requires me to travel a lot and I am out of town most of the time, so my bench time is very intermittent and infrequent. I’ve been thinking about breaking out the WW1 stuff though, so perhaps I’ll get onto a Camel project when I get back. I have two of the Eduard brass “stripdown” kits that are haunting me also, but that’s an entirely different building process that I’m not quite ready to tackle, though that in itself might be a good project to take on the road with me.
Your progress on your project sounds quite interesting. I’ve never heard of the Copperstate guns. Is that an aftermarket item for this model? It’s cool that you’re doing the scratch build on the cockpit. Where did you get your references for relocating the instrument panel and the rigging holes? Sounds like yours is going to be a very accurate model.
the camel kits show up on ebay pretty regularly, you might want to check there. I’ve been tempted but it’s stil a bit pricey. I’ve seen it built in a museum in FL and it’s very impressive.
Stinger Iam in the same boat only I’d be sure your still building more than me. I ravel for a living too. Ive advised many before who are building the Academey 1/32 Camels the best resource materials for the subject are a publication called Windsock Datafiles. I’ve ordered them before from: http://www.wiseowlmagazines.com/ Their worth every penny. I recently also picked up a Polish/English Publication Called Sopwith Camel. by Edward Kocent-Zielinski published by Kagero. That had more scale cutaways and details in 1/48 drawings that I blew up to 1/28 Scale. I’d just like to get a decent model out of it. CopperState is a small Aftermarket manufacter in Arizona. He specialiszes in a few of his own 1/48 resin kits, but he also produces an entire line of 1/28 photo etch details for the entire Revel 1/28 series. Not to mention my favorite Hand carved wood PROPS for the series ! TOms modelworks also produces some PE stuff in the scale but CopperState does the whole line. http://www.amug.org/~copperst/
MG - Thanks for the links and suggestions. I’ll check them out. I’ll bet a well detailed 1/28 Camel would look great.
As for building more than you, don’t bet on it. I’m still on a build that I started in June, and now, lately, I’m having computer issues that have totally consumed me and my time (not to mention having decided to move.)
Off topic - Anyone know how to change my IE default font back to what it was originally? I don’t meant the font in the FSM forum, I mean on my entire computer!!
I know this is a topic for another forum, but since I was here…
If anyone knows about 'puter issues, please email me.
DAMMM, WE paln on mving tis year too. Ha HA got ta beat the revel camel builds been in the works over a year. Just made some recent progress out of shear frustration and self disgust last month. Only its my baby girls & the tedious work of fixing/building that Revel Kit that keep me from more. Stil hasn’t slowed down the hobby kits arriving at the door that I order online while traveling ! HEE HEE I inventoried them last week, over 70 KITS plus AM sets. ! I’ll be building forever if I get the chance ! Sorry to hear the FONT Problems. If it don’t work straight out of the Box I don’t know myself what I’d try to do to fix it? GOOD RUCK!
And here I thought I was the only one who did that. I just got a mini lecture today about that very thing. “What are you going to do with those things? STOP BUYING” is what I was told. Hmmmm…maybe I should get a PO Box? Don’t kow how many kits I have, but I have a feeling I’m about to find out during this move.
How about some pics of some Camels out there? I’ve seen very few of them here on the forum.
I doubt this will show (Don’t know what I’m doing to post pic-Badd Me) These are my EARLY completed kits over two years ago when My wife mistakenly encouged me to go out and buy an Airbrush & compressor to “DO Hobbies” while she watched Football! They were a learning experince with PE which I had never worked with before as a kid. The SPAD is painted using Poly Acrylic French Beige which worked out nice. Otherwise their only slightly better than the Straight out if the box builds on the cover of Revells Kits. I learned a lot and Iam applying (plan to apply) the lessons learned. It was also before I discovered / corrected many of the inaccurices of the Revell Camel. These might not be 56k friendly
MG - Nice work!! The download wasn’t too bad even at 24000 (I’m on the road again…these damn hotel connections!!!).
So, does that make you a football widower?
As for posting pics, it really isn’t hard. There are quite a few webhosting sites provided by other members here in the forum. Do a forum search for that topic and it will tell you all you need to know, including how to include a sig pic.
Thanks Scott - I’ll keep that one in mind also. I have a friend who has the Proctor Camel (R/C) and flies it every so often. It’s amazing to see something that large and accurate actually fly, and it flies at a somewhat scale speed, which adds even more to the realism.
