Could somebody tell me if there is a company out there that makes model kits of cargo ships, bulk carriers to be exact? I am a former merchant marine navigator and would like to build some ships that are simmilar to those I saild on.
I found one website but they only make 2 or 3 models of container ships, one was featured in FSM, a little while ago, I think.
I know that Trumpeter makes a 1/350 Liberty ship which was a break bulk ship. I also know that a victory ship kit is also available. Lindberg made the Savannah which may be available on ebay. I’m not aware of any others except the Lindberg kit of the President lines ship which was a kind of cargo ship/passenger liner.
I agree that there is an unfortunate lack of kits of this genre which is a shame because there is a big variety. I’d love to build an Ultra Large Crude Carrier like the ones built by Aristotle Onassis and let it dwarf my model of the Enterprise. That would be cool to see that supercarriers are not as super as super tankers.
In the old flat bottom boat series, Revell made a T2 tanker, a C3 cargo ship and an APA based on the VC2 Victory ship. Revell of Germany has rereleased them all in the last five years as the Esso Glasgow, the Hawaiian Pilot and the Montrose. They are not too hard to find or expensive. The drawbacks are that they are at odd scales around 1/395 - 1/400, and are neither full hull nor waterline, unless the ship is flat out empty. Easy fix though. But PE railing is easy to find at 1/400.
There’s a really good Liberty out there as mentioned at 1/350 by Trumpeter.
A very exciting new model is the Colombo Express by Revell of Germany. Don Stauffer did a build thread about his here recently, a very nice model.
Great Lakes bulk ore carriers are available in 1/87 for the railroad modelers.
Loose Cannon Productions also has several offerings, although all of theirs are 1/700 and in resin. I’ve built several and they are great little kits: http://home.earthlink.net/~loosecannonproductions/
Theres a really fine build of the Columbo over on Model ship world in the platsic and resin section. I’d send a like but I forgot how. The build is by user name Mic Chow… BILL
NOW , there is a bunch of them out there.I don,t remember the Scale but.I believe IIMAI does some of the NEDLLOYD ships. Also , if you want to build a VLCC or ULCC I can generate a set of plans for you.I do offer them for sale to model train groups. These are in H.O. scale(1/87) They work out to be very large. The one container ship I did for JUST TRAINS in CONCORD CA. Was over five feet long. If you would like plans ,I can do either type (WATERLINE) or (FULL HULL) I would recommend that you consider waterline in 1/350 as the ENTERPRISE won,t even be seen if the VLCC or ULCC is in the forefront! You may contact me at gjgeracci@satx.rr.com if you are interested in the plans. There is and will NOT be any charge for the plans, I am glad to share. tankerbuilder
