Who has built the Revell Monogram 1/48 P38J Lightning?

Who has built the Revell Monogram 1/48 P38J Lightning?I want to build it and want to know what to look out for.How much “extra” work is there?

I don’t know. But honestly if you want a good model of a lightning I don’t know why you’d go for a monogram offering.

Let us know what u find out…I can get that kit pretty cheap

Well I would want a better lightining, but I dont live by any hobby shops, and my parents dont want me ordering online, and so I would go to the arts and crafts store michaels to ge some kits

Hmmmm so you are subsiding on crapp revellogram kits huh? I pity you… Well it has raised panel lines, and little in the way of detail, and mediocre decals.

The fit is very poor and will require alot of work
The cockpit will also require alot of scratch building

Also the pod wheel wells are non existant of detail.

Hope this helps

Ric

I built it many times as a kid. At one time it was the best P-38 kit around. I never had any fit problems although the molds may be worn out. Cockpit detail is O.K. not great wheel well detail is non exsistanat. I have built the Academy P-38 and the Hasegawa P-38 but I still have a Monogram kit I plan on building. I love taking these older kits and seeing what I can make from them. Hers a monogram Kingfisher I made using a scratch built interior and a Monogram Devastator I built.

I built this kit about 12 years ago. Its a good kit, but will require a lot of filling and sanding.

and I’ve built it as well since it also contains a nice gun bay and you can build it as 3 different versions.

Thanks guys,I probably wont be getting this kit anymore

Wow. You guys did a great job talking him right out of building a model…

I say buy it. IMHO, getting a cheaper kit to hone your skills on can only result in refining your ability. I buy cheaper kits because I don’t have the luxury to purchase a $100.00 one…being married with a child and bills out the exhaust-pipes kinda forces me into it. That doesn’t stop me, though.

Yeah Kevin, now that I see it your way, your right, ill probably go forth with buying the kit

Nick,

I haven’t built the kit but my dad did. The finished product looked great to me. He confessed that the plane had some fit problems and needed some gap-filling but was not, by far, the worst kit he’d put together.

Glad to hear you’re considering building it. The way I see it is like this…the most time-consuming but creative model is one completely scratch-built. That is, taking pieces of raw material and creating artwork from it. With Revell Monogram’s kit, the basic shape is there for you to improve on, so it’s that much you don’t have to scratch-build.

Even it it’s not a “perfect” model, the whole idea behind the process is to have fun and gain experience from the build. What’s the worst that could happen? You spend $15.00 on a model that enlightens you to better techniques? Seems to me it’s well worth it.

Post us some pictures in progress. I, for one, would love to see 'em. As (nearly) everyone here can admit, we can all learn something from everyone (even the pro’s can learn something from the amateurs).

Nick,

I agree with Plastic Kevin- buy the kit and have fun with it. I just finished the old Monogram Stuka with the raised panel lines. I had never tried to re-scribe panel lines before but must say that enjoyed the challenge of re-scribing and learning some new skills. I’m going to attempt the same with the old RevelL-Monogram P40 but also try to scratch the cockpit.

Steve

Steve you talking about the 1/32 scale JU-87 right?

I too built this kit many times over. The 1st build was a sick day in 7th grade. Glued it and painted it in about 8 hrs total. It was also the 1st kit that I ever airbrushed when I was in 10th or 11th grade. I say if any kid, especially a 7th grader, wants to build a model, let him. Believe me, there are a lot of things competing for a youngster’s time. Nick, the Revell/Monogram line is perfect to start on. All of us old guys thought they were state of the art way back when. Now where is that Peter Frampton album…

I like the revell monogram sets, thats almost the only thing I build(until I get more money or inherit hasagawa)I just finished the revell monogram A-10 and am working on the Revell Monogram F-16

Yes…buy it and build it…Ill give you a personal example…I just got back into the hobby after a long hiatus. It had been years since Id built anything. I went to a LHS and bought a Dragon 1/48 scale Stug III. During the build I almost lost my mind…All the parts, EXTREMELY POOR directions were just way beyond my skills as an out of practice modeler. Especially the 300 some odd pieces of individual track links [%-)] Anyway I had to put that model aside and start a more simple model…Now Im much happier as opposed to being miserable and confused which is not what you want to be when building models. Anyway I like Monogram…theyre ok…you wont have to spend months on the build and you can have fun…And Michaels is great for buying models I recently got a good deal there which I posted in the forum not too long ago. Buy it and have fun!

nick, the kit that brought me back into aircraft earlier this year was the revellogram 1/48 P-47D razorback. It cost me a little over $10. But I learned some new techniques and worked on some skills and I was happy with the result. So just work on the cheap kit from micheals, and have a good time. Oh btw I highly reccomend the P-61 they have there [^]

I built one for the Monogram group build last year. (It’s still posted in the last pages, go check it out). It took some careful sanding, filing, and scratch building but I perservered!

Good luck if you choose to build one, and let’s see it if you do![:D]

Best Regards,
