My usual photo hosting site has changed ownership and is now charging to host photos. I switched to Flickr, but I’m not really happy with them because they seem to over-organize things for you to the point of being complicated. In addition, Flickr ties your login to your Yahoo, Facebook, or Google account, and I’m trying to avoid that so as to keep my password/login information more secure.
So, I’m thinking Photobucket. Question is, if you use it, how do you like it? Is the login tied to another service or is it standalone? How simple is it to use?
Does anyone use another photo hosting service they’d recommend? Thoughts?
I use Photobucket,it’s all I have ever used.I only use it for model pictures,I really don’t use it for anything else.I think you can tie your log on to another site,but it’s not mandatory
Like Tojo72, I also use Photobucket, and use it only for hosting pics to be posted to forums.
For those who do not like Photobucket, an option is to create your own website. Many ISPs provide space for that as part of their normal fee. If I want to include a picture on a forum that I already have on my website, I just use that. I don’t like to clutter it up with WIP photos, workshop photos, etc., so I use PB for that.
Looks like PB wins ! It is the only one I ever used. They have had some recent problems changing over to a new Beta program, but it seems to be ok now. You can log in using an ID and password of your own selection, or use Facebook or Twitter account, which I will have nothing to do with.
And remember your grammar: “Never use a preposition to end a sentence with.”
I use Photobucket. It has its pros and cons, but on whole I haven’t found anything better.
Pros:
Quick image links. You can copy forum-formatted image links with literally just one click. If you’re looking at a whole album, rolling over one image brings up the image links, so you don’t even have to click into each one. Awesome if you’re trying to post a series of shots. NOTE: The new Photobucket, which is in beta now, no longer has this image link rollover business and they’re trying to do more “social” crap. I’ve reverted to the old PB since it has the features I want.
Easy uploading. I’ve got a plugin for iPhoto and an iPhone app. Super simple.
Cons:
Static albums. Let’s say I upload a new picture to DoogsATX/Aircraft/Eduard MiG-21MF, and post that picture to a forum. If for whatever reason I move that picture to another album, or that album to within another album, that link will be broken. So you have to give a lot of thought to organization up front. Flickr has it’s functionality hurdles, but its dynamic albums are away better than Photobucket in that the photos URL is not at all tied to which album it’s in.
Some pictures have problems. Lately I’ve been having link problems with my iPhone uploads. I think it has to do with the crazy-long filenames the iPhone gives to pictures, but still, they work fine uploaded through Flickr.
The beta site, which is in some ways better and in other ways a lot worse than the current site, will no doubt become the only option at some point in the future. At that point I will consider leaving, since without the one-click image links, there’s nothing keeping me there versus somewhere else.
The new Photobucket has a nicer look to it but it is missing a few features from the original, and I too have reverted from the Beta. Nice thing is, you can leave comments about why you changed back so hopefully they will take note.
I’ve had recent trouble uploading photos via email, but I don’t do that often so its not a big deal.
Like Doogs said, they made it easy with one-click image links, and I liked having a list of my library on the main page rather than having to click a link or two to view it. So I prefer the old version at this point.
Any ways, its what I’ve been using for years now and don’t foresee a change unless something really irritates.
I appreciate everyone’s comments so far. Last night I played around with Flickr some more and got it to work adequately. The only hitch now is their 200 pic per month upload limit on free accounts. I do have some finished builds to post, so maybe I’ll play around with it later this week.
Oh good, not just me thinking the “New Photobucket” isn’t an improvement!!! It is what I use, it’s free, it’s easily accessible via laptop or my iPod. Lots of storage room, and I haven’t noticed any downtime. To be honest, the “improvements” on the beta site may come down to taste, and I really haven’t had any problems with Photobucket.
I use Photobucket, too. No real issues, but I also use Internet Explorer, and I’ve found that using tabbed browsing or multiple browser sessions, and Photobucket sometimes produces “hiccups”, that is, my IE session with PB will lock up, and then the other browser sessions will lock up. Seemed to start when IE8 came out, and persists with IE9. Haven’t tried IE10 yet, but I have started using Firefox as well.
Also, I haven’t hit the limit on PB yet, at which they will want me to pay for a subscription.
Don’t much care for the “new look” PB, either. But working in IT, I understand that analysts and developers have short attention spans.
I bit the bullet and paid for a Photobucket subscription. I finally did hit the free storage limit. I took one for $49 a year, and it’ll take me a long time to use up that space.
I use Tinypic, pretty basic and provides a few options for posting types. Allows albums, multi-file upload, etc…
I’ve yet to use up the storage and I’ve got lots of photo’s on there.
Only model picts and misc stuff, nothing crucial/family related.
All free as well.
Worth having a look at if you want a free option.
I too use PhotoBucket, after trying a couple of others many years ago. Also like some others I hit my upper limit, which if I recall was 1 gigabyte, and I now pay a whopping $32 per year for 20 gigs. I recently recieved an email that I’m up to 14% of my max, and would I like to expand? Well, let’s see: That’s 4% in just over a year. If I keep this up I may have to up the ante sometime around 2036.
