I am working on the interior of a Tamiya Wildcat and the inside of the wheel well is supposed to be white. I have never had any luck getting white to look decent. Does anyone know any tricks to make it cover well. I am planning on using ModelMaster enamel white. Also, can I use a brush or do I need to break out the airbrush? (I don’t have a set work space and the set-up for such a small part would take a while) Any help would be appreciated.
Is this going to be flat or gloss white? Are you more concerned about the coverage ability of white paint, or are you worried about yellowing? Is this a situation in which you could use a spray can? There’s a whole lot to say about white paint, so I thought I’d ask those questions to narrow it down.
I’ve done the blue tinting to white paint idea. It doesn’t work for enamel. Some might say it does, but they should spray something with that same blue tinted white and compare it to the old paint jobs they’ve done. I currently have a whole bunch of stuff I have to redo thanks to this bogus idea I picked up from usenet.
White is one of the colors that just doesn’t cover well. The wheel wells on the Phantom I’m working on are white also, and I used Tamiya Fine Surface Primer (white, of course). It covers pretty decently, but it still took two coats to get good coverage. A lot of people like Krylon sprays, but I personally haven’t had good results from them.
I was planning on using a flat white paint. My biggest concern is coverage. I probably could use a spray paint can as this would be a single part (actually, part of the Wildcat’s landing gear is white as well. I could assemble that and I spray paint it as well.) Do you suggest a particular brand of spray paint (i.e. model master or something else).
Use Floquil Reefer White, it’s the best.

[#ditto] I agree with Mike that Floquil Reefer White is the best white paint available. If you want to try acrylic, Vallejo white is also very good.

I haven’t tried either Vallejo or Floquil so I may be missing something. My preference is Tamiya Fine Surface Primer.
Floquil Reefer white would be my recommendations as well. Testors MM Flat White covers pretty good too. If I had to choose, it would be Floquil though.
since it’s a landing gear part, it usually gets dirty if the plane opperates off a dirty surface. therefore, I would just paint the thing with a thick coat of white, then add some brown to the edges, soem silver

Thanks for the suggestion on the dirty gear. However, how dirty would it get flying off a carrier (I am doing a Wildcat off of the Ranger)?
