Which Vallejo Paint set should i get?

I thought i would try out Vallejo paints, and noticed they have sets you can get.

I do mostly German armor & figs, can someone recomend a set i could get? Thanks!

I like Vallejo. I reckon that they’re very good and quite a big range. There is a paint set you can get. I don’t know who will stock it, maybe Great Models.

Try this,

The set you want out of the range is REF 70114 WWII German camoflage set. THis is a 16 colour set

There is also REF 70108 Panzer Colors.

There is also a range of sets called Panzer Aces It consists of sets of 8 colours to a set with 6 sets in the range

Model Air, which is Vallejo’s range of colours for airbrushes has the 16 colour German camo set REF 71179

I hope this helps you.

James

Thanks James, so they make paint just for airbrushes? Can i use their other ones in my airbrush?

Vallejo make two main ranges, Model Color (white cap, “70” prefix) and Model Air (black cap “71” prefix).

The Model Color paints are formulated primarily for brush painting and are considerably thicker than Model Air (or for that matter any other model paint). They can be thinned for airbrushing using Vallejo’s proprietary thinner or distilled water. Though the Model Air range is said to be “airbrush ready”, the paints can benefit from additional thinning - it all depends on your setup and individual painting style/preference.

The Model Color paints, being formulated for brush painting, have a very heavy pigment load and need considerable thinning for airbrushing. Tamiya acrylic thinner (X-20A) is marginally compatible. Other alcohols can cause the paint to clump up (or “flocculate”) and render it a useless airbrush clogging lump.

I am still really only experimenting with mine and coming to grips with the best ways to use them. Brush painting with the Model Color range, I’m finding myself preferring to go thin and apply multiple layers to build colour depth, which one can do easily as it doesn’t lift underlying layers. (unlike Tamiya acrylics)

If you haven’t used them before, I’d suggest picking one bottle of Model Color and one of Model Air to trial before committing to a whole set.

This link to a “user guide” for Model Color paints on Vallejo’s site may be of interest: http://www.ttfxmedia.com/vallejo/cgi-bin/_modelis.asp?p1=ing&p2=modelcolortecnicas#modelcolortecnica01

PS: You will be paying more for the convenience of “airbrush ready” paint. If you don’t mind thinning the Model Color range, depending on your thinning preference, you will get up to 4x the volume of paint (or more) per bottle, compared to a single bottle of the Model Air paint.

Phil i can’t thank you enough for this informative help, its much apreicated.[:)]

Wow. I never thought about it that way. GREAT point! I’ve been looking at picking up one of their 72-color boxes…think that sealed the deal as to which way to go!!! [:D][tup]

Chris, you won’t be sorry about the switch.

I use the Model Color range in my airbrush all the time with excellent results. I simply mix with tap water to a “milk” consistancy.

As for the colors, you can get the prepacks which basically give you one bottle free vs. ala carte. Are you coming North anytime soon? Guardian Games here in town has the entire range in stock…prepacks and ala carte. Let me know if you need the address, or maybe I can pick-up some colors and send them down to you.

Model Air is their airbrush specific line. It works good for me for general spraying, but I have trouble with fine lines and details…it’s just a little to thin for my brush. Mixing my own I can compensate and get it just right.

talk to you soon,

Rick

Many thanks Rick, i’ve never heard of Guardian Games. I went to Bridgetown 2 weeks ago cuz their website listed them, unfortunatly when i got there i found out they don’t carry them in stock. So i’ll probably order them from Squadron.

Chris,

Squadron is listing the paints for $3.25/bottle

Colorado Miniatures is listing for $2.95/bottle

Colorado Miniatures

They are fast as well.
