Which dark yellow is the best to use on WWII German armor? I have never been satisfied with the offering from Tamiya as being too tan. I loved the old Pactra, but Pactra is long gone. All of the others that I have seen are too tan.
I have always used Tamiya lightened with buff to adjust for filtering and weathering. If you want something different Vallejo makes modulation sets including one of German Dark Yellow.
I love Tamiya’s paints. I have lightened with light grey and white before. Weathering changes everything, so just be sure to use something to lighten the paint first.
I hate Vallejo Dark Yellow because it has way too much green in it. My favorite is 50% of Tamiya Dark Yellow + 50% of Tamiya Deck Tan. Initially, the mix looks light but after weathering and a matte varnish, the end result looks just right.
Never get stuck on finding "perfect shade"s of paint straight from the bottle. Especially German Dark Yellow. Mix white into it and experiment with different colors–gray, tan, Buff, etc–and just “eyeball” it. As has been correctly stated, weathering wil change eveyrthing significantly, so learn to work the color with your weathering technique. My DY tanks always start out as nearly a whitish shade of yellow, which then gets brought into “corect” tone with weathering and shadings filters. I don’t think any two of my German tanks has the same shade of DY on them.
