which colors and whose paint did you use for 1/72 revell u552 late version uboat

HI, i am trying to focus on u552 late version, as to what brand of paint and specifec color you guys used to acheive the best detail

Timthx,

I use WEM’s Kriegsmarine colors. They are the closest thing to the real thing.
As far as U-552 goes:

Upper hull and CT would be Hellgrau 50 (Baltic) this is a lighter version of Hellgrau 50 which is more of a silver grey.

Lower hull and metal deck casings would be Schiffsbodenfarbe III grau I.

The bulwark (bridge area) and wintergarten railings would be Dunkelgrau 2.
As far as the decks go: they were wooden and covered with a black preservative. This would lighten over time and stain from sea water and moving about. This is a subjective area. I like to use artist’s colors to get the disired color and effect. I use Rembrandt’s ivory black, raw sienna and flake white ( a lead white that is very subtle).

Check out Dougie Martindale’s report on U-boat colors and weatherings. Very informative.

Hope this helps,

Take care,

The Dougie Martindale stuff is excelelnt, and WEM paints are fantastic. For Humbrol mix ratio equivs, have a look at:

Hi rokket,
I just discovered your site, it’s very informative. Special thanks for sharing those most interesting color mixes! Just a hint: the link to your website (included in the signature pic of U-557 you use in this forum) could be more clearly shown - I never suspected that this picture actually led to your site before reading this post!
Cheers

Glad to help, Imperator-Rex, and thanks for link note, have updated.

Very interested in any weathering you’re doing…I think I’ll have to practice a bit on some junk models. Post pix!

The kit calls for Humbrel paints according to the “Warship Modeler” magazine.
